Hello folks! Wondering why there hasn’t been anything posted here in a while? Well, it’s because I’m leaving Substack and heading over to Ghost which will serve as not just my official newsletter homebase but the official all-things Jim website. Photos, music, podcasts, movies, everything will be there.
I’ve sang the praises of Substack in the past mainly for convenience and user-friendliness but despite the cost and efforts of migrating to a better platform, this decision is set-in-stone and final. It’s when I started reading on BlueSky that people there literally refuse to click on Substack links that I began to question whether I should stay, or I should go. I have chosen to leave SS for a better home.
There are several articles floating out there about how even in 2025, Substack is still doing very little to moderate hate speech or content that is sickening to discover is even out there. Leaving here is hard since a lot of personal heroes and favorite writers continue to utilize Substack for reasons that I completely understand. Again, convenience + comfort + paid subscribers exist here too. I also realize that yes, all platforms (including Facebook and BlueSky) have a lot of evildoers out there too, perpetuating hate speech. But there are alternatives.
I tried one a while back and there are others: Buttondown, Beehive, Patreon. Once I started doing research about Ghost, I began to realize that I like it more. Yes, Substack is free. It will even host your podcast for free too. As much as Patreon drove me bonkers, I’d sooner return there for paid subscribers for 2026 and supplement content there as well. What it all comes down to, I really don’t want to support Substack anymore when many people I respect and follow on BlueSky actively refuse to support writers who continue to use Substack.
Stay tuned and get ready for a change soon. You don’t need to do anything. All subscribers will just get emails in a different format via Ghost in the next week. Very excited for the official launch of JimLaczkowski.net which will include the entire Director’s Club archives, all my songs, photos, writing and film.
