Hi! I had planned to write a post about the creation of my latest short comic, “End of the Infinite Journey”, but before I could finish it something else happened. I received the great news that I was selected for this year’s Iberoamérica Ilustra Catalog with this series of illustrations:
¡Hola! En esta ocasión había pensado en escribir un post respecto a la creación de mi último cómic corto “Fin del viaje infinito”, pero antes de que pudiera completar eso algo más sucedió. Recibí la gran noticia de que quede seleccionada en el Catálogo Iberoamérica Ilustra de este año con esta serie de ilustraciones:
This illustration competition is one of the most prestigious in the region, the selection of artists is always fantastic, which is why I felt such immense joy and gratitude at having been selected. Actually, this is the third time I’ve applied, so I thought I’d share and reflect on my previous entries.
Este certamen de ilustración es uno de los mas prestigiosos de la región, la selección de artistas siempre es fantástica y es por eso que sentí un gusto enorme y mucha gratitud al haber logrado seleccionar. En realidad esta es la tercera vez que aplico, y por eso se me ha ocurrido compartir y comentar mis participaciones anteriores.
My first attempt was in 2019. The idea revolved around a dragon apprentice (dragons are one of my favorite subjects). I still really like the first and third illustrations in the series, but I think the second one could be better. I feel like the digital technique looks a little off, I was trying to emulate a traditional look, but it doesn’t quite work. I’m also not sure if it tells a clear story. All in all I don’t think it was a bad attempt.
Mi primer intento fue en 2019. La idea giraba alrededor de una aprendiz de dragón (dragones, de mis temas favoritos). La primera y la tercera ilustración de la serie me siguen gustando bastante, pero creo que la segunda podría ser mejor. Me parece que la técnica digital queda un poco extraña, pues buscaba emular un acabado tradicional pero no lo logré del todo. Tampoco estoy segura de que se cuente de forma clara una historia. Con todo, creo que no fue un mal intento.
Here’s an funny and embarrassing story about that: the day they announced the list of those selected, I’m absolutely certain I saw my name on it and I shared the news everywhere. But then, when I checked again, my name was gone! Was it a glitch on the website? Did I look in the wrong place? Who knows. But I had to go back and delete my posts and say “actually no”, how embarrassing!
Una historia vergonzosa y chistosa al respecto: el día que anunciaron a los seleccionados yo estoy completamente segura de que vi mi nombre entre ellos, y me aseguré a compartir la noticia por todos lados. Pero luego, cuando volví a ver, ¡mi nombre ya no estaba! ¿Fue un error de la página? ¿me asomé en un lado equivocado? Quién sabe. Pero tuve que ir a quitar mis posts y a decir “siempre no”, ¡qué vergüenza!
My second attempt was last year, with a dark fairy tale theme. Although I didn’t make the cut that time either, I’m still very proud of these pieces. I remember spending a lot of time planning them (I made over 50 thumbnails!) and experimenting with the finished look. Mi segundo intento fue el año pasado, con un tema de cuento de hadas que termina mal. Aunque tampoco logré la selección, sigo muy orgullosa de estas piezas. Recuerdo haber pasado mucho tiempo en su planeación (¡hice más de 50 thumbnails!) y en la experimentación del acabado. Hice un post en su momento contando a detalle cómo realicé estas ilustraciones de inicio a fin, puedes leerlo aquí.
Looking back on this, I realize something interesting: I remember that in the first series I did, the one with the dragon, I spent very little time on preliminary planning. In contrast, for the second series, the planning phase was what took me the longest, and I did a lot of preparatory work. And interestingly, for this year’s illustrations, I again spent very little time on planning, here are the only sketches I made before sitting down to create the final pieces:
Haciendo esta pequeña retrospectiva, me doy cuenta de algo interesante: recuerdo que en la primera serie que hice, la del dragón, pasé muy poco tiempo en la planeación previa. En cambio, en la segunda serie la parte de planeación fue lo que más tiempo me tomó e hice mucho trabajo previo. Y curiosamente, en las ilustraciones de este año que quedaron seleccionadas, de nuevo le dediqué poco tiempo a la planeación, he aquí los únicos bocetos que realicé antes de sentarme a hacer las piezas finales:
Just six thumbnails, a couple of character sketches, and a color test, and that’s it. Why do I think they worked? Well, for starters, it was a series I’d been thinking about for a long time, you could say I’d been sketching it out in my mind for several months, so I already knew what I wanted to do. During that time, I also improved my digital technique with a traditional look. But above all, I think there’s a story that’s much easier to follow in the illustrations, which one? you tell me.
Solo seis thumbnails y un par de bocetos de los personajes y prueba de color y listo. ¿Por qué creo que funcionaron? Bueno, para empezar era una serie que ya tenía mucho tiempo pensando, podríamos decir que estuve bocetando en mi mente durante varios meses y por eso ya sabía que era lo que quería hacer. En este tiempo también he mejorado mi técnica digital con acabado tradicional. Pero sobre todo creo que hay una historia mucho más fácil de leer en las ilustraciones, ¿cuál? tú dime.
