On Monday, the National Weather Service issued an advisory for the Southeast’s multi-day heat wave through Friday: “Well above average temperatures will continue for the Southeast U.S. through this week before cooling back toward more typical levels around Saturday. Numerous daily record highs are expected to be tied or broken over the next few days. Highs in the upper 90s to 100s along with high humidity will bring heat indices of 105-115°F and widespread Major to Extreme Heat Risk. Many areas may see their hottest temperatures so far this year or in the past few years. There will be little nighttime relief from the heat and urban areas may not cool below 80°F.” Good thing Tuesday hailed National ICEE Day. Invented in 1958 out of desperation on a hot day in Coffeyville, Kansas, Dairy Queen owner Omar Knedlik stashed some sodas in the freezer to cool them off during a hot spell. The sugar prevented the sodas from turning to ice. Instead, they became slushy, and his customers loved the icy texture. Thus, the ICEE was born.

More of inflation’s cooling was on display in July’s import prices as pressure from non-auto consumer goods has eased materially.
