Britain doesn't want Reform UK. It wants electoral reform.

I don’t usually do longform Substack notes on political issues but I felt this was important.

There was an excellent article by Political Satirical this week over the elections that showed a picture of a Reform UK political advert in the London Standard. This was put out in the final few days of the election.

It said: Vote Reform To Get Starmer out

Never mind the Local Elections were about voting for who gets to take the bins out, not the Prime Minister! With this one ad, Reform turned the elections (in which only half of the country could actually vote) into a defacto General Election or a Referendum.

Actually, you have to admire the messaging on this. Just as with Boris Johnson’s ‘Get Brexit Done’ 2019 slogan; after three years of haranguing the British Public over #BollocksToBrexit which left us (and no doubt the entirety of Europe along with us) with collective PTSD; Get Brexit Done was genius as it gave people an out that they really, really wanted to see. So they voted for it. Boris Johnson won by a landslide and secured a ridiculous, seemingly unassailable 80 seat majority. The rest, they say, is history. Never mind that Bloody Boris had no intention of actually delivering on his promise. The slogan worked.

Two years later he was forced to quit when the entire Government resigned at his appalling lies, mishandling of Covid, and supporting a sexual predator for a position as Deputy Chief Whip. #ChrisPincherScandal.

What is it with these politicians and sexual predators? Eh?!

This advert in the London Standard hit the same zeitgeist. ‘Get Starmer Out’.

Three pithy, simple words in a phrase that encapsulated the #MandelsonCrisis, that has gripped Starmer’s Government for nearly a year now, ever since it was revealed that the man Kier Starmer appointed (famously described as ‘The Prince of Darkness’ as if that wasn’t clue enough!) as the Ambassdor to the USA had ties to the most prolific child sex abuser in history: Jeffrey Epstein. This was made worse by the revelation that Starmer did so without bothering to wait for the FO to do a proper background check.

We all ‘know’ that Starmer ‘appointed’ Mandelson PRECISELY because of that relationship. Because Starmer was, at the time, ‘the Trump whisperer’. We know this because the Independent said so.

We know. Starmer knows. Trump knows. Starmer knows that we know, and yet he lied about it and said he didn’t know about Mandelson’s links to Epstein.

Mate, we can smell bullshit from Westminster all the way up here in Scotland!

So, after months and months of the Mandy Scandy eating away at the airwaves, we, the British people are pig-sick of it all and we have had enough of Sir Kier ‘I’m a proper Human Rights Solicitor, I am, and I’m going to turn anyone who protests the #GazaGenocide into a terrorist!’ Starmer. Almost right up to the last minute, just before the election there were days and days of Parliamentary debate dedicated to a vote of confidence in the Prime Minister which he WHIPPED his MPs not to vote for. Even Bloody Boris Johnson didn’t do that! With Labour’s comfortable majority, despite two opposition MPs being kicked out of Parliament for calling Starmer a liar in the house; of course the motion failed.

These 650 MPs, instead of dealing with all the other crises that beset our Emerald Isles; such as the #CostOfLivingCrisis which has been rolling on since the Tories came to power in 2010 due to their Austerity cuts to vital services; ditto the #HousingCrisis; #NHScrisis; and now, thanks to Trump the #EnergyCrisis; the War in the Middle East, the Genocide in Gaza; the #SmallBoats #RefugeeCrisis and so on and so on… were dicking about discussing whether the Prime Minister lied or not. (Of course he did, but no one could prove it.)

Starmer likes it at No 10. Now he’s got rid of Boris Johnson’s dog fleas and the appalling wall paper.

Besides, IF Starmer quits now, he is giving in to the appalling Reform dog whistle. Not that there’s anyone to replace Starmer. His politicking has seen to that. He’s blocked all contenders nicely. Too clever by half.

So, Reform are riding high on a wave of dissatisfaction. If they can get Starmer out, as their ad promised, then they can (they presume), force a General Election and then its just a hop-skip-and-a-jump to Farage getting his foot into Number 10 and choosing his own appalling wallpaper.

IF is the biggest word in the English Language. But the existential crisis for Starmer will roll and roll and the fact of the matter is, he is NOT good for Britain. He is a weak PM, beset by the Mandy Scandy; he’s not the Trump Whisperer - in fact Trump has the knives out for him now. Starmer wanted to prove he could succeed where Bloody Boris failed and ‘Get Brexit Done’ and get the fabled ‘US Deal’. Trump tore that up and will not give it to him, because there is nothing in the UK that Trump wants under Starmer. What Trump wants is Nigel Farage, his pet sycophant in No 10 first.

So here we are.

Unless Britain reforms its First Past The Post voting system, then - aha - Reform will likely sow yet more disruption and discontent right through to 2029.

The Indy piece I borrowed my title from says:

“The traditional argument for a “one person takes all” voting system – which is also used in Europe, but only by France (over two rounds) and Belarus – was that it delivered stability. We have hardly had stable governments in the 10 years since the Brexit referendum and Thursday’s results suggest the next general election will be unpredictable and chaotic. There will be no safe seats and many MPs will be elected on a small share of the vote.

In five or six-party politics, it will be very difficult for any party to win an overall majority, leading to post-election horse-trading between the parties on a coalition, or pacts for key Commons votes. Yes, that would happen under a proportional system, but at least the parties’ respective strengths would fairly represent what people had voted for.”

In order though for that to happen, Starmer needs to get the press under control. The problem is, He’s too weak to do that. He doesn’t have the political nous to bring pressure to bear (like Cameron did before him), he hasn’t got the charisma of Bloody Boris; nor does he have the Communication skills of Farage and Reform; and he certainly doesn’t want to ‘scare the markets’ and upset his (flawed in my opinon) economic plans.

Brace yourselves, its going to be a bumpy ride!

Brexit 2.0 only this time it will be Starmexit.
