A secret that exists in exactly one place, inside a mind or on a physical document locked in a safe, defines the core of real privacy. Digital sovereignty rests on this exclusive control.
Data value operates on a spectrum. At one end stands high asymmetry: information that derives its power from remaining known to only one party. At the other end stands full symmetry: information that gains strength from being verifiable by many. Permissioned data occupies the middle ground, shared under strict controls, neither fully private nor fully public. Institutions navigate this spectrum daily. They maintain internal permissioned records while issuing symmetric certificates to the world. Both ends of the spectrum fail when their defining property breaks.
Personal Data and Secrets: Value from High Asymmetry
Highly asymmetric data carries value precisely because it remains private. Private keys, seed phrases, financial credentials, medical histories, and strategic plans all depend on that exclusivity. When asymmetry breaks through leakage, replication, or unauthorized access the data either loses its worth or becomes a weapon against its owner.
Real cases show the human cost. The 2015 Ashley Madison breach exposed the personal details of approximately 36 million users seeking discreet relationships. The fallout included multiple suicides, widespread blackmail through extortion letters, ruined marriages, job losses, and public shaming that followed users for years. Lives were destroyed not because the data was false, but because the asymmetry that protected it was shattered.¹
The 2017 Equifax breach leaked the Social Security numbers and personal records of 147 million Americans. Identity theft exploded, with victims facing fraudulent loans, credit card accounts, tax filings, and medical bills in their names. Many spent years and thousands of dollars fighting to restore their financial lives, while credit scores were devastated and long-term stability was lost. The data did not become worthless. It became actively harmful to its owners.²
Institutions: Trust from Symmetry
Institutions scale trust by creating symmetric records and issuing verifiable certificates. Birth certificates, diplomas, passports, and official ledgers function as shared points of consensus. Their legitimacy depends on the symmetry holding. Any authorized party must be able to verify the record against the official source.
During my time at Checkpoint, a buffer overflow mapped detected infections to the wrong TCP/IP session. Logs showed the compromise, but forensic teams could never prove it on the actual machine. A 4.3 million euro deal collapsed because the symmetric record no longer matched reality. Trust in the verification process was lost, so was the customer.
When that symmetry breaks, the system collapses. The 2014 Rolling Stone article “A Rape on Campus” was later retracted for factual errors, yet uncorrected versions continued circulating online. This led to lawsuits, damaged reputations, and a lasting erosion of public trust in investigative journalism.³
In 2012, counterfeit Avastin cancer drugs entered the U.S. pharmaceutical supply chain through altered tracking and distribution records. Patients received ineffective or dangerous medication, prompting FDA recalls and highlighting how a single break in symmetric verification can directly endanger lives.⁴
The 2012 London Whale incident at JPMorgan Chase resulted in a 6.2 billion dollar trading loss due to an operational error in an Excel-based Value-at-Risk model. Faulty formulas and manual data copying produced unverifiable risk assessments that the institution relied on as symmetric truth. The failure exposed deep flaws in how financial institutions maintain internal consensus.⁵
Implications for Digital Sovereignty
Current digital systems frequently force personal data into more symmetric forms, cloud replication, shared platforms, custodial services, while institutions struggle to maintain clean symmetry against forgery and manipulation. Permissioned systems attempt a middle path but often inherit weaknesses from both ends.
The real requirement is a layer that respects the spectrum. Mechanisms that allow verification and consensus without destroying the asymmetry that gives personal data its value and protective power.
This is the direction of the work I have been pursuing.
Closing Reflection
The breakdown of high asymmetry in personal data and the failure of symmetry in institutional records are connected failures. Both undermine what can be considered real. Addressing them requires treating each property, asymmetry for value and protection, symmetry for scaled trust, as fundamental.
