New season = new fashion. Since it was just NYFW, I feel like it’s the perfect time to normalize coordinating outfits with your dog.

For me what comes from within is a love for Sully so strong it found its way into my closet. So let’s go back to where it all began…
A few years ago, not long after we got Sully, we were on our morning walk to the park on a crisp fall morning when my husband looked over and asked, “Did you do that on purpose? Match your outfit to Sully?”
I in fact had not. At least not consciously. But when I looked down, I realized I was dressed head-to-toe in brown and white. Basically Sully’s mirror image, from her white paws to her velvety-brown body and white chest.
My subconscious dressed me in “Sullycore” without me realizing it…
My husband swore I was doing it on purpose, strangers at the park even started making occasional comments, so in Britney’s words: “Oops, I did it again”. And then again. Until finally, it was on purpose.

Eventually, Sully started wearing more than just her natural coat. We don’t dress her up just to look cute (though she absolutely does).
Sweaters keep her warm during brutal NY winters, shirts stop her from itching when allergies flare up, and sometimes a snug fit helps her feel safe when she’s anxious – think thunderstorms, fireworks, garbage trucks, [insert other loud, scary noises].
But even though the clothes serve a purpose for her, they also do something for me. This is my diary, so I’ll admit it: nothing makes me happier than seeing her strut around in a ridiculously cute outfit.
One sweater turned into five, five turned into her actually needing her own closet. Then they dropped matching human clothes, and suddenly we were very much twinning on purpose.
Oscar de la Renta said, “Fashion is about dressing according to what’s fashionable. Style is more about being yourself.”
Well Oscar, being myself looks a lot like matching color palettes, pants, sweaters – anything – with Sully.
And because I fully support enabling this lifestyle, here’s a little mood board of inspo to get you started on dressing like your dog.
