Diana Soare · The Real Question

There’s a moment that happens every morning for most people.

The alarm goes off. Before you’ve made a single conscious decision, your hand is already reaching for your phone.

You didn’t choose that. It just happened.

You snap at someone later and only understand why a few minutes afterward.
Or longer.
You take the same route to work without seeing it.
You say the same phrase, in the same tone, in the same moment, that you’ve said hundreds of times before.

None of these were decisions made in the moment.

What you repeat often, your brain automates — moves it to the background, out of conscious reach. Efficient. Invisible.

So far, so useful.

The problem is what got in there without asking your permission.

The way you panic when something gets hard.
What you secretly believe about yourself — whether you can or can’t.
How you ask for love.
Or how you push people away exactly when you’re most afraid they’ll leave.

All these were caught early in your life, when you were absorbing everything around you without filtering. From the people in your home, your teachers, the environment you grew up in.

You repeated them year after year without ever asking: “Wait. Do I actually want to react this way?”

“That’s just how I am.”

Except it isn’t. It’s just what you’ve done so many times it moved to autopilot. The distinction matters — because automatisms aren’t unchangeable. They’re only unexamined.

And what you can observe, you can start to work with.

Here’s the exercise:

Choose one thing you do on autopilot today. The first thing you reach for when the alarm goes off. The route you take without seeing it. The phrase you say every time you’re stressed.

Just observe it. Don’t try to change it. Notice it happened, ask yourself whether it’s what you want, and — if you can — where it came from.

Is it actually yours?

Most people skip this question. It feels too small. They’re waiting for the breakthrough — the one insight that changes everything at once.

But the pattern you’ve never questioned is the one running 95% of your day. The 5% you think you control is negotiating with the other 95% at every moment.

What you interrupt, you can eventually replace. Not through willpower — through repetition in a different direction. That’s it. That’s how it works.

This is part of a series exploring the mechanisms behind the patterns that keep people stuck — and what actually shifts them. More to come soon. Subscribe to receive it in your inbox.
