I have so many photos of Kyle Busch in my archive, with his family, smiling, holding Brexton and beaming in Victory Lane. But I also loved the Kyle Busch in my photo below. The guy who I had to walk up to after he was out of a race, or frustrated or still not happy with his car. KFB was all of that! I love this photo as much as I love the smiling ones. This, too, was KFB.

On Kyle Busch Day this 8/18 I searched for a short piece of audio from one of my interviews in the past that would be perfect to share today. It was in 2022 when Kyle won at the Bristol Motor Speedway dirt track. It wasn’t at all what he was used to at Bristol, and the car was different yet he found a way to win amidst chaos. Here’s one of my questions in my Victory Lane interview that day. It is how I’ll remember Kyle, always.

We laughed so hard.

Kyle had a sense of humor about the “KFB” nickname which he loved. But he made it clear, with a smile, that you had to get the letters in order, or else…

The KFB nickname gave even Kyle a definition of all that he was at his best: never giving up, never mediocre in aspiration, never to be counted out, always his unique self and demanding more always, even of himself.

Kyle Busch first started being referred to as KFB around 2020. Rabid fans of his could have started referring to him as KFB earlier than that - but there is no official documentation.

The nickname, as I recall, caught on after he used it in a post-race interview when discussing his ability to drive a damaged car to a top-five finish at Texas Motor Speedway in July of 2020 in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.

We will miss and treasure the time we had with the one and only “KFB.”
