Since missiles are apparently the topic of the season, it is worth looking at them from a slightly different angle. Not through the usual charts of stockpiles and production rates, and not as a full market or industry analysis, but through the economics of how new military technologies actually change defense demand.
One point on defense stocks can be made upfront: weakness in the sector does not necessarily change the underlying long-term thesis.
Modern warfare is increasingly discussed through leaks, satellite imagery, drone footage, and fragments of intelligence. That creates a strong temptation to extrapolate from the latest visible technology and conclude that entire categories of existing military equipment are becoming obsolete.
The reality is usually more complicated.
Drones are a good example. They are cheap, scalable, increasingly autonomous, and capable of creating serious operational problems. But much of the response to drones still relies on familiar capabilities: air defense, electronic warfare, sensors, command-and-control systems, and large inventories of interceptors. The main challenges are often less about discovering entirely new technologies and more about scaling production, lowering cost per engagement, automating detection, and deploying these systems widely enough.
The same applies to satellite connectivity, mothership-controlled systems, autonomous AI in weapons, cheap sensors, distributed ISR, and other emerging capabilities.
There is one important pattern behind all of them.
Every effective new class of weapon does not simply replace the previous one. It creates demand for another class of systems designed to counter it.
To deal with aircraft, militaries still need traditional high-end air defense — now increasingly upgraded and networked. To deal with drones, they need that same expensive air defense plus cheaper short-range systems, electronic warfare, detection networks, automated battle management, and large inventories of low-cost interceptors.
And to defeat those defenses, militaries need mobile strike platforms — stealthy and conventional, crewed and uncrewed, inexpensive and high-end, often in significant numbers.
This is why demand for supposedly “obsolete” aircraft is unlikely to disappear. The same is true for missiles, artillery, armored vehicles, satellites, ships, and much of the traditional defense industrial base.
That is what makes the current defense cycle particularly interesting.
This is not simply one generation of military technology replacing another.
It is layering.
Every new way to attack creates demand for a new way to defend. Every new way to defend creates demand for another way to penetrate that defense. And much of this spending is being added on top of existing capabilities rather than replacing them.
Depleted inventories are only part of the story. The broader issue is continued militarization: governments need to rebuild stocks of traditional weapons while simultaneously creating inventories of systems that barely existed as meaningful defense budget categories a few years ago.
This is why claims that drones have made aircraft obsolete, missiles have made ships obsolete, or AI will soon make most existing military hardware irrelevant should be treated with caution.
In most cases, the new technology does not remove a line from the defense budget.
It adds another one.
And the list keeps getting longer.
Traditional defense companies should therefore remain important participants in this cycle. At the same time, new suppliers will emerge across sensors, unmanned systems, software, communications, electronic warfare, low-cost interceptors, autonomy, and other categories.
Some will take market share from incumbents. Some will be acquired by Lockheed Martin, RTX, Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems, Rheinmetall, or other major defense groups. Many will disappear, as happens in every technology cycle.
But the overall market is unlikely to shrink as a result.
Quite the opposite: for the first time in a long time, the defense industry is adding multiple new layers of capability at the same time.
The sword does not replace the shield.
It creates demand for a new shield.
And then for a new sword.
