Dave Bautista is officially picking up the Leviathan Axe, with the former WWE star now confirmed to play Kratos in Prime Video’s live-action God of War series.
The role was previously held by Ryan Hurst, best known for Sons of Anarchy and for portraying Thor in God of War Ragnarok. However, Hurst tore his bicep while performing a stunt in June and required surgery.
As such, filming was paused, with Hurst’s expected recovery time reportedly extending beyond the production schedule, meaning the producers had to search for a new lead to play the iconic character.
Dave Bautista officially cast as Kratos in God of War series
Well, after reports previously claimed Bautista was negotiating with Amazon MGM Studios, Variety has now confirmed that “Dave Bautista is officially taking up the mantle of the God of War.”
The Guardians of the Galaxy and Dune actor was first linked to the role in early August, but no deal had been announced at the time. Bautista is now also listed among the cast on the official Amazon MGM Studios website.
Sony Santa MonicaThe decision has sparked a mixed response from fans. Many believe Bautista’s physicality and dramatic experience make him an ideal choice for the Ghost of Sparta. “Bautista has the presence and intensity to make Kratos unforgettable,” one fan wrote, while another celebrated the news by saying: “We about to eat good.”
Another argued that the casting makes more sense than some might expect: “I don’t think people realize how right this will actually be, when we want it to not be. Kratos is Drax with better backstory & weapons.”
However, others remain disappointed that Hurst will not get to complete the role, commenting: “Should have waited for Ryan Hurst to heal,” while another added: “I feel bad for Hurst… can they have him still participate in the show in some capacity?”
Prime Video has already ordered two seasons of God of War, which are planned to film back-to-back. Production is expected to resume in Vancouver in fall 2026, including extensive reshoots of the material previously filmed with Hurst.
