When the Cheese Moves

There’s nothing like understanding your brand from the inside out. If walls could talk, right? The years it’s been around, clients won, clients lost, gut instincts that proved right more times than anyone would like to admit. Hard earned experiences.

What experience can’t always account for is change. Change, as most brands discover, doesn’t ask permission and usually leaves behind problems that aren’t so clear until they show up in the numbers.

Today we’re going straight at what happens when your audience—that cheese you’ve spent years building around—moves. And the gap between who our audiences once were, and the importance of understanding who they are now. A lack of clarity between the two is exactly how revenue slowly slips through the cracks (if we’re not careful).

Fact 1: Branding doesn’t work the way we want it to. It works the way it does. If it worked the way we wanted it to, we’d have a lot less to write about.

Fact 2: Audiences need to be built on, well, facts. Evidence. Market-driven, customer-informed and user-centric evidence that reflects the world as it changes. Not as we remember it being.

Audience as a brand asset ties directly to revenue. It’s personal. Because of that, audience tends to be where hope replaces homework, hunches become beliefs, and beliefs become a strategy.

When “We think this is what they want,” or “We hope this resonates,” becomes a strategy, it’s time to take a second look at audience as a brand strategy asset. Because the distinction between audience assumption and insight is the difference between a brand that chases its own tail and one that knows: that tail isn’t actually theirs, and whoever it belongs to is going somewhere else, fast.

When a brand truly understands its audience through research and evidence-based insights, messaging becomes an intentional act of hitting meaningful revenue targets. The right people feel seen, the wrong people opt out, and somehow the market starts to feel smaller yet more powerful all at the same time.

Visionary leaders, this series is for you. If you’re navigating change while facing non-stop pressure and having to make decisions regardless, we’re here to help put some real stakes in the ground you can use to navigate it all. True audience building starts with a simple, uncomfortable decision to stop trusting what you think, and start finding out what’s true. Whether you’re starting from scratch or confirming what you already suspect, you’re in exactly the right place.

We write about brand strategy the way it works in practice, not the way anyone wishes it did, so business leaders like you have the tools you need to understand (and master) decision-making levers and move with confidence. As always, these tips are dropped straight into your inbox every two weeks. Until next time, when we start poking around at what primary audiences truly mean for a brand like yours.
