Evolution did not optimize us to see reality but optimized us to survive.
Donald Hoffman has spent 40+ years working on a disturbing idea.
His analogy is a computer - you see folders/buttons and not transistors/voltages. The interface hides reality because seeing the machinery would make you less competitive for survival.
Perception works the same way.
Colors, objects, space, time, even our bodies may be icons in an evolutionary interface rather than fundamental features of reality. His game-theory work claims the probability of selection optimizing perception for the true structure of reality is effectively zero.
What he is building next is more interesting - instead of starting with particles and deriving consciousness, he starts with observers.
Different observers have different windows into the same structure. A smaller observer sees only a trace of what a larger one sees.
The smaller your window, the fewer state changes you observe, and your clock effectively runs differently. Hoffman believes this may eventually derive time dilation and length contraction, which would mean spacetime emerges from relationships between observers rather than being fundamental.
The analogy is an ant. It sees almost nothing of what you are, and you can change its world instantly without it understanding the cause.
Hoffman asks why we assume there is nothing above us in the same hierarchy. That is where he connects the theory to UAPs: something that looks impossible in our interface might be ordinary in a larger observer window.
So the conclusion is that the reality available to human perception may be an EXTREMELY COMPRESSED SUBSET of whatever actually exists.
