Hello Designmom Substack readers! It is I, Gabrielle Blair’s 5th child, Betty. My mom is thoroughly occupied doing her part to dismantle the patriarchy by meeting a deadline for her upcoming book. She asked that I write her newsletter today, and possibly again throughout the week, which I am delighted to do since I needed something to occupy my Summer hours. She will be back in under a week, but in the meantime I (and maybe others) will entertain her loyal readers.

A bit about me: I’m 20, and I’m studying English literature and French literature at the Sorbonne in Paris. In 2019, when we decided to move back to France, we ended up narrowing the options down to either Normandy or North Carolina. For some reason beyond my comprehension, I was fully team NC at the time. I was even somewhat disappointed when we made the final decision (“My life is so hard, I have to move to the countryside of France blah blah”) but now I can’t imagine ever moving back to the States.
After nearly seven years in France, I have been exposed to the best and the worst of French culture. I’m not here to degrade the country I love, so without further ado, here are some French culture essentials & favorites of mine.
