When Minnesotans think about taking a trip to Mexico, they mostly think Cancun or Cabo. Alyssa and I just got back from a week in Mexico City and it’s incredible. More museums than any city I’ve ever been to (Frida Kahlo is a must visit, the fine arts palace, Palacio de Bellas Artes, and the Anthropology Museum are my favorites. The food is epic - from Michelin starred spots like 2-starred Pujol (with a spectacular Mole Madre), 1-starred Rosetta (the cabbage taco), to fabulous spots like Limosneros & Maizajo and the street food on nearly every block with the finest tacos and tlayudas you’ve ever had. If you love coffee and cocktails - some of the world’s most acclaimed bartenders and coffee roasters are in Mexico City.
There’s also something about Mexico City that is more authentically Mexico than most of those resort areas. So many coffee shops where they only spoke Spanish, and I had to dig deep to my high school Español. So many people who would initially assume you spoke Spanish and then offer to switch to English (reminded me more of Madrid than Barcelona.)
Daily direct flights thru Delta, it’s just 4 hours, same time zone (they don’t do Daylight Saving so it was an hour behind) no jet lag. This is perfect for a long weekend!! I’ll be rolling out some guides to CDMX for paid subscribers first… so if you’re planning a visit, you might want to upgrade to a paid subscription!

BREAKING NEWS IN WAYZATA: Just got word that one of my favorite West Metro restaurants, Eloise, is converting to Bar Eloise. LINDSAY POHLAD: “Over the last few months, we’ve listened closely to our guests, and one message came through clearly: they love the food and the spirit of Eloise, but they want a place that feels easier to drop into, more casual, and more connected to the neighborhood.” Eloise will close August 31 - September 3 to refresh the look. Front window will open to the larger patio, TVs in the bar area (I suspect you’ll be able to watch Lindsay’s husband Tom’s baseball team there,) more high-top tables in the bar, Culinary direction will shift toward approachable, high-quality fare inspired by the spirit of sister restaurant The Grocer’s Table. LAST CHANCE - JUST SIX SPOTS REMAIN: CALIFORNIA WINE DINNER AT MARA / FOUR SEASONS HOTEL MINNEAPOLIS
ONE WEEK FROM TODAY: I love Hilt… this is an amazing opportunity to learn from acclaimed winemaker Matt Dess at Mara in Four Seasons Hotel Minneapolis! THURSDAY AUGUST 6: The Hilt & Jonata: A Tale of Two Vines is going to be a really special wine dinner. Hilt & Jonata are part of the same prestigious wine family as Screaming Eagle. Soil-first, just like Mary Kennedy’s terroir-driven wine program.
Two seatings remain: 6:15p, and 6:30p - book at Open Table or just click this link: https://fluence-media.co/4pdSnXO
I bought DRC at the Mara Bar a couple weeks ago- if you’re looking for special wine experiences, Four Seasons Hotel Minneapolis is your spot.
Thanks to Four Seasons Hotel Minneapolis for being a DeRUSHA partner!
BAUHAUS LIVES: Story broke while I was out of the country, but St. Paul-based ABV Technology bought the Bauhaus taproom in NE Minneapolis and the brand/recipes, so they’re going to open as Bauhaus. They didn’t release an opening date, but I found this job listing on Indeed [https://fluence-media.co/4gUW9Cw] that said they’ll open in August. ABV co-founder and CEO Ben Jordan in a news release: “When we launched our business lowering the alcohol content of craft beverages nine years ago, Bauhaus was our first customer, and its Nah brand was our first major success. Since then, we’ve created more than 500 alcohol-adjusted products for more than 200 beverage brands.”
100 NEW BEERS/SLUSHIES/SELTZERS AT THE FAIR: Some wild ones out here, you probably read about the Ranch-flavored cream ale (Old Ranch Hand) from Dual Citizen inside the Coliseum at Rooted & Wild by Snack House. Not sure about that one. MNMO write-up: https://fluence-media.co/4pGt3ZT
I’m intrigued by:
At Ball Park Cafe, I’m excited for Surly’s Homer Black Pepper IPA with piney hops, grapefruit, and Zanzibar black peppercorn.
Fulton’s Galaxy IPA at The Frontier - just a normal IPA with really fruity and tropical Galaxy hops
Giggles’ The Lime in the Coconut cream ale (from an Iowa brewer!) blends toasted coconut and fresh lime and comes with a toasted coconut rim.
Not sure what the Luther Auto Pit Stop is but I will try the The Hazy Pineapple Whip pale ale - flavors of pineapple, marshmallow, vanilla, and citrus in a tropical, creamsicle-inspired pale ale.
Blue Barn’s Strawberry Guava Agua Fresca Cider sounds fantastic: lime, sea salt, and hibiscus to its tropical fruit base.
The Watermelon Mule blends ripe watermelon, lime, and spicy ginger in a brewtail served over ice with a sugar rim at Andy’s Grille.
LuLu’s Public House has a soft serve wine this year from Rustic Roots, turned into a Sangria Sundae with mandarin oranges, grilled peaches, and berries steeped in citrus coulis.

COOL COLLAB WITH TULLIBEE’S CHEF + YIA VANG: I’ve enjoyed seeing all the collabs with local chefs and local bartenders working together on events. This is a cool one for August 20, I’m a big fan of Chef Nathan Kim at Tullibee (in the Hewing Hotel) and Yia Vang (Vinai) and they’re teaming up for a dinner with a 5:30p and 8pm seating. Just $130.
