I Nearly Deleted This Note. It Beat A Month Of My Best Advice

I wrote a Note last year I nearly deleted before posting.

Four lines. One of them admitted something I’d spent about a decade not saying out loud, and I sat there with my thumb over the button working out who’d see it.

I posted it. By the evening it had brought in more subscribers than previous month’s Notes combined.

That still bothers me, if I’m honest. Because I’ve written genuinely useful things that nobody stopped for.

Here’s what most of us do with the hard years. We save them for later. We tell ourselves we’ll talk about it once we’ve earned the right, once the numbers look better, once it reads as a story rather than a confession. So we post the tips instead. The things we know.

And readers scroll past, because they can get tips anywhere.

What they can’t get anywhere is you, standing in the thing they’re currently standing in, holding a torch.

The trouble is this goes wrong easily. Creators try it and it lands as a humblebrag with a sad first line. Or it lands as a diary entry, and the reader is left holding your feelings with nowhere to put them. Both make people wince. Neither gets shared.

The difference between the two is smaller than you’d think, and it isn’t in the story you tell.
