Lyrics © Dennis M. Lowery

The cemetery scatters,

dark coats go wide.

The late screams break

on every side.

Two rows over,

the work is done —

them that did it...

they don’t run.

One man stands

where the wall runs flat,

hands at his sides —

he don’t move from that.

The one still thing

where the rest all run,

squared to the open...

like he ain’t done.

I know that face…

the name comes through —

comes up whole,

hard and true.

Hold that name

behind my teeth,

taste the bitter wrong.

As the years sweep…

…me along...

No one to care...

no name to call —

the million miles gone…

no distance at all…

My right hand closes

on nothing there —

the haft, the heft,

the grip, the care.

I put that life

under grass and stone,

it climbs back up...

finds me alone.

His face goes still...

then changes slow:

one job behind him,

and one to go.

The name I buried

won’t lie still —

thirty-one years,

and it never will.

It never will...

Never...

Will...
