Good morning and welcome back to your am edition of the Democratic Wins Media daily newsletter. Today’s edition is about attention — who’s getting it, who’s avoiding it, and who can’t stop giving it away. The First Lady has now been out of public view for a full month, even as scrutiny of the White House inner circle intensifies. Two of the Democratic Party’s strongest voices just shared a stage in Georgia. And the White House spent yesterday proving, in real time, that it has no idea how to handle the rise of Senator Jon Ossoff.

Here’s what we’re covering:

  • Melania’s vanishing act hits one month — the longest stretch of the second term, amid mounting inner-circle scrutiny

  • Mark Kelly barnstorms Georgia with Jon Ossoff, as the White House’s attempt to prosecute Kelly keeps backfiring

  • Even Jake Tapper is laughing at the White House’s “nuclear” overreaction to Ossoff — which is only making him bigger

Before the news, a word about why this newsletter exists. The Ellison family now controls CBS News and CNN with Bari Weiss in charge. Bezos owns the Washington Post. Murdoch runs Fox and Roku. The billionaires are buying every outlet that could hold them accountable. Democratic Wins Media is the alternative: we’re fully reader-funded, editorially independent, and will never be purchased. First Lady Melania Trump has not been seen in public for exactly one month, a Daily Beast analysis found — one of the longest stretches she has been absent from public view in her husband’s second term. She was last seen at Trump’s side at the FIFA World Cup Final in New Jersey on July 19. Since then, she has skipped the dignified transfer of U.S. soldiers killed by Iran, the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Sen. Lindsey Graham’s funeral, and every one of her husband’s Bedminster golf weekends. She has appeared in public on just 38 days all year — once every six days on average. The contrast with her predecessors is stark: in the same window of 2014, Michelle Obama was spotted publicly 11 times; Jill Biden was seen four times in this stretch of 2022 while also teaching at a community college. Her absence comes during the same stretch in which Trump’s inner circle has fallen under intense scrutiny — including the reporting by the New York Times’ Jonathan Swan and Maggie Haberman we covered last night on aide Natalie Harp’s extraordinary access to the president, a story Democrats like Sen. Jon Ossoff have now taken directly to the campaign trail.

Why it matters: We’re not going to speculate about the Trumps’ marriage — the documented facts are striking enough. A First Lady who has effectively withdrawn from public life, a White House that won’t explain it, and an inner circle that even the Secret Service reportedly found alarming: that’s the picture of an administration in chaos, told entirely through its own conduct.

By the numbers: 38 days — Melania’s total public appearances in all of 2026, versus 140+ days in the first 180 days of Trump’s first term.

Sen. Mark Kelly is spending three days in Georgia campaigning for Sen. Jon Ossoff, and Tuesday’s joint rally in Columbus showed exactly why Republicans are worried about both of them. Ossoff introduced the astronaut and Navy combat veteran by pointing at the administration’s own conduct: the Trump administration tried to prosecute Kelly earlier this year over a video in which he and other lawmakers reminded servicemembers they can refuse illegal orders — and Kelly leaned straight into the fight, telling Georgians frustrated by the weaponization of the Justice Department: “You probably saw I said something last November.” The Hill reports that when the Pentagon opened its misconduct review, Kelly’s circle joked about sending the administration a gift basket for boosting his profile. The pairing set off a fresh round of 2028 ticket chatter — when Politico asked Kelly whether the swing foreshadows an “Ossoff-Kelly” ticket, he quipped, “Hey, why’d you put it in that order?” — though Ossoff flatly told MS NOW he has “zero interest” in 2028 and both men insist the mission is November. The numbers back the focus: Ossoff leads Republican Mike Collins by an average of nearly 8 points, the largest lead of any battleground Senate candidate in either party.

Why it matters: This is what a deep bench looks like: a combat-veteran astronaut the administration tried and failed to intimidate, campaigning for the strongest battleground incumbent in America. Every attack the White House has thrown at Kelly and Ossoff has made them bigger — and they’re spending that capital on winning the midterms, not on 2028.

By the numbers: ~8 points — Ossoff’s average polling lead over Mike Collins, the largest of any battleground Senate candidate this cycle.

CNN’s Jake Tapper spent part of Tuesday’s broadcast chuckling at the White House’s response to Jon Ossoff — because, as he explained on air, the administration is doing the senator’s work for him. After Ossoff’s rally lines calling Trump a “draft-dodging crook president” and needling his travels with aide Natalie Harp, the White House went, in Tapper’s word, nuclear: communications director Steven Cheung called a sitting U.S. senator a “cuck loser,” while spokesperson Davis Ingle branded Ossoff a “feminine theatre kid cosplaying as Barack Obama.” Tapper’s on-air assessment: “I think the White House really took the bait here.” He said he’d tried to explain to a White House official that raging at reporters over the story only guaranteed more coverage — “and now we’re sending cameras to Georgia to see what Jon Ossoff has to say.” Even conservative commentator Jonah Goldberg conceded on the same panel that Ossoff was “smart” to take the gloves off. Ossoff, for his part, kept it substantive on MS NOW, saying senior aides are telling Trump what he wants to hear rather than what he needs to hear — “and the nation is at war. And we cannot afford that.”

Why it matters: The fury tells you Ossoff touched a nerve — you don’t deploy the communications director to hurl schoolyard insults at a senator over a line that didn’t land. And every unhinged response buys Ossoff exactly what a battleground incumbent wants: free national attention, CNN cameras at his rallies, and a growing brand as the Democrat who gets under Trump’s skin and doesn’t flinch.

By the numbers: 2 official White House spokesmen reduced to name-calling a sitting senator — while CNN dispatched cameras to cover his next move.

The White House can’t explain where the First Lady is, can’t intimidate Mark Kelly, and can’t stop handing Jon Ossoff the national spotlight — this is what it looks like when a bully runs out of moves.

Democratic Wins Media has no billionaire owner and no corporate sponsors — we answer to readers, and only readers. That independence is why we can bring you the First Lady’s month-long disappearance, Mark Kelly and Jon Ossoff’s Georgia offensive, and the White House meltdown that even CNN is laughing at — the stories billionaire-owned newsrooms skip.
