I suppose I should say “X”, but I still can't get myself to call it that. Just feels wrong. I returned to Twitter partly because of work. I work in AI and AI coding, and that's where a lot of the discussion happens so it was important to be part of it. I must admit I still hate the "for you" feed. You can tell it finds a topic and doubles down on it, whether you like it or not, and then you have…
I’ve started a daily photo tweet . Right now I am posting from the archives, but the general idea is to inspire me to start taking a photo a day. Doesn’t matter what camera I use, but it’s a habit I’d like to get back to. The way I am doing it is to schedule the post the prior day for a morning post at 8:30am. Let’s see if it lasts. I hope it does.
I'm always connected to my phone. It use it as a camera, as a music player, to capture ideas, to read the news, for messaging, and so much more. That you can do all of that on a single device is amazing. But, and maybe this is a function of age, I've found myself frustrated with all the choices, with all the notifications. If I throw my Apple Watch in that magnifies even more. So I've decided to…
I’ve been poorly disciplined about my online properties, including this one. Things I have done over the past few months My photo site is the most active online property I do have. I decided up update the design a little bit and gave it a name Flashing Apertures , a companion to my YouTube channel , Flashing Neurons . I’ve also been working on the kid’s Soccer channel on Youtube.
As some of you know, the kid is passionate about soccer. He’s still early in his soccer journey, playing his 3rd year of Select soccer with ambitions for moving up to higher levels. I started a YouTube channel where I am now cataloging highlights from his various games (wherever we have a Veo).
The Leica Q3 is a magnificent camera. it has become my default travel camera, one I used for the first time when we went to Hawaii last December. I haven’t come close to knowing it inside out but it’s already yielded some amazing pictures. I had always assumed that the Northern Lights were something that required a trip to Alaska or Norway. Over recent years, there has been a glimmer of hope that one could get a sight of the Aurora Borealis from places not too far away from Seattle. What I never imagined was that I could get on my balcony in the middle of Seattle, with all the limits of big city pollution, and see an Aurora with my…
As some people know, one of my favorite things in life is a ringside seat for our son’s passion for soccer. This was his second season at Seattle United (he plays on a Select team) and their first season playing 9v9. For him this meant playing a new position, switching from left wing to a central attacking midfield role (like his idol Andres Iniesta). For the team it was a learning season, since 7…
Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future. - John F. Kennedy Sometimes I feel it is convenient to tell yourself that change is a good thing. It is also true that I happen to believe that staying static is not a good place to be and usually ends up with a life less rewarding. Over the past year I’ve made a few changes to how I manage my…
I have now been at Amazon Web Services for fifteen years. It is a journey I never expected and one of the most fulfilling I could have experienced. Just a month ago, I stepped away from the org I started nine years ago to start a brand new journey leading our generative AI-driven builder experience. I am not going to spend too much time reminiscing, but wanted to repost something that was…
Our vacations are often an excuse to go take pictures of birds. During mid-winter break this year we headed off to Ridgefield, WA not far from the Washington-Oregon border. It is a place we’ve gone to a few times now to spend time at Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge , which is one of our favorite places to go especially the River “S” unit. While we have done day trips to Ridgefield in the past,…
Photography, birds, and synthesizers/recording music are the hobbies you’ll most often find me talking about or dabbling in but there’s one that precedes all of them. Listening to music has been one of my passions since I was in high school. When I was 13 I discovered Pink Floyd and Led Zepellin and there was no turning back. In the early days my listening options were a boom box that sat next to…
2022 was the year that soccer became a big part of our life. When our son was in Kindergarten and 1st grade, it seemed unlikely he would take to team sports. He’s smaller than most kids his age and didn’t seem to show any interest in the sport (he seemed to enjoy basketball more). He ended up joining a rec league team with his classmates, so twice a year we did end up playing several matches. Then…
I am still completely incapable of planning a shoot in any meaningful way. Run and gun remains the name of the game. As a result a lot of my recording ends up being a collection of footage that has some connective tissue or Instagram Reels/YouTube Shorts. They are usually easy to edit and grade. A great example is the recent video from a trip to Nisqually or my video of a young Osprey trying to…
As many know I am an avid birder (have been since I was a kid) and started dabbling in bird photography in 2012. During the pandemic that interest went into overdrive. It helped that my son also got interested in birds and photography and it became the weekend family activity. I also switched to mirrorless cameras during this time, which opened up the opportunity to start shooting video as well.…
Earlier this week I deleted the Twitter app from my phone. Twitter has been a big part of life for over a decade but over the past few years it’s changed to a point where I just wasn’t enjoying reading my feed, and increasingly others that I enjoy following were either leaving or talking about Twitter itself. I might return if things change, but for now I am going to take a break. This is at least…
