Some part of you, I suspect, already knows what I am about to say. You have felt, more often lately, that the life you are living has the quality of a dream you cannot quite locate. It is vivid, aching, beautiful, sometimes unbearable, and yet it is not fixed. Rooms you lived in for decades have become photographs. People you loved have become presences. Your body, so long taken for granted, has become an event you are watching from very close.
In the final chapter of a life, the membrane thins. You begin to notice that the world was always more like a passage than a place.
I want to offer a teaching that is old and steady, one that becomes gentler and more merciful the closer we come to the threshold. It is this: the world you are standing in right now, this planet, this body, this hour of the morning, these words in front of you, is a bardo. It is a between-state. It is a loka, a domain of appearance, held together by conditioning, arising in awareness, and no more solid, and no less sacred, than the dream you had last night or the dream that will arise when this one ends.
I do not say this to unsettle you. I say it because it is the single recognition that, once made, lets the whole final chapter be lived in freedom.
In the Vedic and Buddhist maps, the heavens, the hells, the pure lands, the intermediate states, there is a temptation to read them like a Rand McNally atlas of the afterlife. The nondual reading is different, and more radical. A loka is not a place. A loka is a mode of appearance, a stabilized way that experience discloses itself when consciousness is patterned in a particular manner.
Earth is not the exception to this. Earth is the local instance of it. What we call the physical world is a beautifully stable, widely shared, sensorimotor-coherent mode of appearance. Its stability makes it feel like a substance. Yet stability is only a feature of the conditioning, and offers no evidence of a substrate hiding behind it. A frightened mind renders a hell. A devotional mind renders a heaven. A sensorimotor-embodied mind with human sense organs renders Earth.
Nothing travels between the lokas
Here is the piece that most people find most difficult, and that I have come to find the most freeing.
Nothing travels between the lokas. No soul boards a train at the end of this life and disembarks in the next. What continues is not an entity. What continues is patterning, the karmic vṛtti-signature, the way the field has been grooved by a lifetime of action and identification.
I sometimes call this “consciousness rhyming with itself.” The rhyme is real enough to explain why a life feels continuous, why a newborn is not a blank slate, why habits and inclinations and even sudden recognitions can seem to arrive from before. Yet the rhyme is not substantial enough to require a soul-substance carrying luggage from one hotel to another. The ocean dreams a fish; the fish is a pattern in the water. When the pattern disperses, no swimmer swims away.
This is why waking each morning is such a precise rehearsal for what is coming. In deep sleep, the sense of self, the body, the world, the pain, and the sufferer all disappear together. Something remains. You know this, because in the morning you report, “I slept well.” What reassembles at dawn is a pattern re-cohering as conditions ripen, not a soul returning from a journey. The death of the body, in this frame, is the same process at a still longer interval.
The reassurance goes deeper than the survival of any “you.” Awareness itself never traveled, never began, and does not need freeing. What you are, most basically, is that in which the traveling appears to happen.
Grief does not have to be reasoned with
When someone you love dies, the pattern that was them disperses from this bandwidth. It does not follow that they have “gone” somewhere in the spatial sense, and it does not follow that they have simply ceased. The field in which their appearance occurred is undiminished. The awareness in which you knew them is undiminished. What you loved was never their body. What you loved was the way awareness shone through a particular configuration.
That shining is not gone. It cannot be gone. It is what you are.
The final chapter, then, is the chapter in which the leaving is seen through, and the world becomes, for the first time, entirely trustworthy. Not because it will not change. Because the changing was never other than the light in which it changed.
You are already home. You have never been anywhere else.
Namaste,
Deepak
