So the new year always brings about new ideas, and for me generally new semesters.
[If you don’t know me, I split my time between teaching and designing for professional theatre, as well as being a well rounded crafty human, cat mom, and user of Oxford commas. I make stuff. Lots of stuff and I bat around a lot of ideas on a daily basis.]
I’m always thinking about the next project. Sometimes to the fault of not concentrating on the current project. *Gestures at this very post when I should be working on syllabi.*
However, my brain is always ticking and I hardly take the time to stop and assess where I’m actually heading. I’m hoping that this place will allow me to write about those ideas, analyze how I go about them, and maybe brain dump so I can work thru how to prioritize what comes next.
I just started this group on Facebook called “Work with Me” which at the moment is a group of about 200 people that are interested or at least curious about co-working in a virtual space. Do I have delusions of grandeur about it? Absolutely. I dream of a space where people can set up rooms to support, motivate, and discuss ideas on their terms and time parameters. Some people (like me) often need “sprints” and others need huddles with like-minded people. Some want to work with friends and others prefer the company of strangers.
I’m hoping that folks will find their people and set up rooms of their own to help their own productivity. Body Doubling work has certainly helped me a lot. I’ll write about it eventually, among other things.
Is this you? The idea generator, but lacking the energy for follow through, or finding that anything else shiny pulls your focus away from the task at hand? Do you want to hear about the trials and tribulations of getting work done? So much gets written about ways to do things better, or faster, or more efficiently. I know. I’ve read a ton of books and articles. I’ve tried a lot of things.
Do I have advice? Probably. I am a teacher after all. Though I try to live and lead by example rather than soapboxing about everything. I believe in DOING MORE and TALKING LESS. However, processing through writing is helpful to me because it’s a form of reflection. Do I like reflection? Eh, my brain often likes to move forward to the **new thing (TM)** versus looking backward to self-assess where I went wrong. Is it restlessness? Is it ADHD? Is it something else? Stay tuned.
