MAGA, Israel and Islam

So much noise surrounds the current state of the America/Israel alliance. A lot of it parallels the noise surrounding the state of the MAGA movement.

Although this general subject has already been the subject of many posts on this Substack, it’s worth revisiting in the wake of this week’s stinging electoral repudiation of Thomas Massie, the Congressional poster child for today’s anti-Israel, anti-Jew ‘woke right’.

According to Massie (and Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens and others), the previously great, America-saving MAGA movement (which they claim to have once been so deeply aligned with) has now been permanently and irreparably fractured by a newly enlightened focus on and exposure of (!) the nefarious role of Israel—or what they really mean: ‘the Jews’—in shaping American foreign policy.

Israel/the Jews, say they, have drawn Trump into an unwise and unwinnable war with Iran, and have now allied America with a morally repulsive, genocidal, child-killing state of Israel…America must break from Israel if it is ever to be great again…and Tucker or Candace or Massie will run for and win the Presidency in 2028 on this newly enlightened and trendy-among-non-boomers path.

The woke right is dead wrong, and their noise should be tuned out.

They have a superficial understanding of American and even human history, and a stunning level of blindness on the subject of Islam.

In a previous post on this Substack, the story is told of Benjamin Franklin’s entry into the national contest to determine the design of the Great Seal of the United States of America.

Franklin was the oldest of America’s Founding Fathers. As the saying goes, he was MAGA (or more accurately, MAG!) long before it was cool...certainly long before Donald Trump was born. Yet even in the late 1700’s, Franklin knew something about the divine connection between the founding of America and the experience of the children of Israel.

Here’s some of that ‘Great Seal’ story:

The description of his [Franklin’s] contest entry:

“Pharaoh sitting in an open Chariot, a Crown on his head and a Sword in his hand, passing through the divided Waters of the Red Sea in Pursuit of the Israelites: Rays from a Pillar of Fire in the Cloud, expressive of the divine Presence and Command, beaming on Moses who stands on the shore and extending his hand over the Sea causes it to overwhelm Pharaoh. Motto: Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God.”

No one knows Franklin’s entire thought-process behind his concept of an appropriate ‘great seal’, but it is apparent from his submission that he saw the formation of the United States of America as following in a direct line of light from the Bible’s account of humanity’s quest for freedom—as exemplified by the children of Israel escaping from their bondage to the Egyptian Pharoah. In other words, Franklin seemed to see the formation of the American nation as divinely inspired, perhaps even part of a divinely ordered plan in human history. (As an aside, it is this spiritual link to the children of Israel that is the real foundation of the enduring bond between America and Israel. That bond is not about politicians on either side whose conduct may abuse it at different times; it is not about the flows of financial aid; it is not really even about geographical borders on the earth or the tracing of human ancestry. It is about shared participation in an ‘arc of history’ toward spiritually-driven freedom that cannot be permanently altered…).

The spiritual linkage between America’s founding and the children of Israel’s escape from bondage that Ben Franklin apparently saw is a timeless truth anchored by faith in the God of the Bible; it endures through all generations; and it is discerned and felt at an intuitive level among American patriots of all ages in 2026.

That’s why the woke right’s “new” take on how Americans should view Israel isn’t really new at all—it’s just historical/religious ignorance and recycled antisemitism by today’s version of the predominantly secular ‘smart people’—and will not take hold in America no matter how much the woke right social media echo chamber tries to convince itself otherwise.

…and about that ‘religious ignorance’ and ‘stunning level of blindness on the subject of Islam’…

There are moderate Muslims who are not individually a threat (and in many cases are nice people many of whom would like to be free of sharia), but there is no moderate Islam. The Muslims committing terrorist attacks around the world are not ‘extremists’ or ‘radical’; they are doing what their holy book tells them to do.

Islam/Muslims have for many years been such a minority in America that even serious thinkers simply dismissed any discussion of the subject as unnecessary. …

Islam (again, not speaking of people but of the whole of its ideology or theology) is dark, depraved, violent and barbaric; and its ‘Allah’ is the opposite of the God of the Bible.

Islam is the antithesis of Christianity and Judaism; its presence and proliferation in America could upend and replace the Constitution and destroy this country and—if it is not resisted and removed—will eventually plunge all of humanity into an age of darkness like nobody living in western civilization can even contemplate.

It is the darkness of Islam that has literally surrounded Israel since its formation in the 1940’s. Few in America [most assuredly including the noisy voices of the woke right] can contemplate what it is like to live in Israel—to be a Jewish state surrounded on every side by people whose holy book teaches them from childhood that an honorable purpose in life is to murder Jews, and in the case of Iran, by a theocracy that sees nuclear weapons as a wonderful tool by which to potentially eliminate all Jews in Israel at once.

It is utterly naïve to think the ‘twelver’ mullahs of Iran do not think this way or would not use nuclear weapons against Israel (and America) because of humane considerations. They would use them with relish; they think Jews are subhuman, and other infidel/non-believers are deserving of the same fate as the Jews.

This is the context in which to view the situation in the Middle East. And it should be viewed further in the context of the long arc of history, not the last few years or the next six months.

I have been physically unable to watch the videos of October 7 in Israel. Just reading the descriptions of what the Islamic jihadists did to innocent Israelis—including women and children—violates conscience and turns my stomach in a way that nothing else ever has. I find it hard to even conceive of such human barbarity. Millions of American patriots [a/k/a, THE MAGA MOVEMENT] would agree, and say: “If this had been inflicted on ‘my’ homeland and ‘my’ people, and if I were in charge of the response, I would do everything possible to wipe the perpetrators off the map, and I mean everything and I mean all of them.” [bold font added] There is no negotiating with evil and barbarity; no possible compromise; no possibility of co-habiting with them.

Are there innocent Muslims, including children, who may be swept up and killed or injured under this approach? Yes--and that is a horrible, tragic but unavoidable consequence of war, just as there were many innocent Germans, including children, swept up in the final attacks necessary to destroy the Nazis. But there comes a point in the human scheme of things where there is no other way to destroy evil. In WWII the maniacal aggression of Hitler was evil, and in this era the maniacal and barbaric aggression of Islamic jihadists--who also use women and children as shields in war--is evil. The people acting out evil are responsible for the consequences.

Unless and until Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens and others on the woke right demonstrate an actual knowledge of:

(1) the reality of the specifics of sharia (Islamic law);

(2) the conquest ideology of Islam carried out by its adherents over 14 centuries, and

(3) the absolutely irreconcilable conflict between Islam and the American constitutional Republic,

…their anti-Israel commentary is and will remain nothing but noise. And their concept of MAGA will be flawed, and their critiques of it ultimately vacuous.

The suggestion that the MAGA movement is irreparably fractured by any continued alliance between America and Israel is ‘sound and fury, signifying nothing’.
