Despite administration claims that the shooter’s handheld video (second clip above) shows him being hit, it actually just corroborates what the analysis in the video at the top of this post points out: the woman turns her car away from him, and when she pulls forward, the startled officer abruptly lowers the phone to shoot. We don’t see if she made contact - it’s possible she did, but it’s clear that she did not “run him over” (you can see his feet are well outside of the car’s trajectory in the top video) nor at any point in the altercation does she indicate an intent to do so.

It is never wise to Monday-morning quarterback situations like this from a couple of video clips, and that’s not the intent of this post. I’m sure the shooter responded out of legitimate fear. I don’t doubt the driver had been antagonistic to the officers and contributed to the tension. That’s not my point. My point is the administration’s response in the immediate aftermath was to make obviously false and inflammatory claims about what was clearly evident in widely available video. Whatever actually happened, there is no evidence that this was “domestic terrorism” by any reasonable definition, or that the officer was “run over.” Yet this is what our nation’s leaders were confidently and loudly saying before the scene had even been cleared.

A deceitful liar at least acknowledges the existence of truth by trying to conceal their violation of it. A blatant, unrepentant liar is a bullshitter—flooding the discourse with garbage to deny that truth has any authority at all. The truth is knowable, and worth knowing. Attempts to make you believe otherwise are a form of manipulation. That’s what this administration does when it brazenly spreads easily disproven falsehoods, time and time again. It’s trying to overwhelm you so you give up on trying to determine what is true.

If this is what it means to have Christians run the country, Christians should not run this country. The founding fathers knew well the danger that marrying church and state posed to both church and state. This is why. When the state can convince people that it is on the side of God, it can justify anything. When a faith becomes indistinguishable from the pursuit and exercise of earthly power, it will become corrupted by the moral compromises that such pursuits demand. As a Christian, I can think of few things worse for our witness. The behavior of these “Christians” causes decent people to find Christianity repulsive, and indecent people to embrace it for the wrong reasons.
