Dear District,
I wanted to send a quick dispatch because THIS TUESDAY MAY 26 is the last day to request your mail-in ballot to vote from home in DC’s June 2 Primary.
If you don’t have your ballot already, you can request it one of two ways:
Download the Vote4DC iPhone or Android app and click Request an Absentee Ballot
Or, fill out this pdf form and email it completed to DCabsentee@dcboe.org. (While the form says you “must” print and sign it, you do not actually need to print and sign it!)
To get your ballot, you have to submit your request to DC’s Board of Election by 5pm on Tuesday.
You can track the status of your ballot here. If you aren’t able to get your mail-in ballot, you still have the option to vote in person. Early voting is ALREADY OPEN at 20 sites across DC—and you can cast your ballot at any of them, regardless of where you live. You can find all the info you need about mail-in ballots and early voting here.
Bottom line—you have to jump through a few more hoops to vote this year, and a really important window is closing on Tuesday!
I’m going to send a complete voter guide later this week(end) with my recommendations in every race. But I wanted to make sure you are tuned into two important races that will shape the future of the city.
In Ward 2 (Downtown, Dupont, 14th St, Shaw, Logan Circle, Georgetown), 7 candidates are running to replace disgraced ex-Councilmember Jack Evans. Evans made the despicable choice, 10 days after he was expelled from the Council for corruption, to run for his seat again using public financing.
The most progressive candidate in this race, with a real shot to beat Evans, is Jordan Grossman. I have been volunteering with Jordan (and working for him) for over a year because I think he has the values and the experience DC needs right now. Jordan is endorsed by DC’s most progressive Councilmember, Elissa Silverman, as well as a slew of labor unions representing frontline workers, and DC’s progressive community organizations like DC for Democracy, Sunrise Movement DC, Jews United for Justice Campaign Fund, and the Working Families Party.
What to do: If you want a shamelessly corrupt Councilmember to be replaced by a solid progressive who has made ethics a core theme of his entire campaign, sign up to send texts or make calls for Jordan. (If you need help getting plugged in, just text or email me.) With such a wide field and the first competitive Ward 2 primary in decades, this race will likely be decided by hundreds of votes or fewer.

In Ward 4 (Petworth, Brightwood, 16th St, Manor Park, Takoma, Shepherd Park—the northern tip of DC’s diamond), Janeese Lewis George is running to unseat one of the Council’s most conservative and least productive members, Brandon Todd. Janeese is a young, Black woman who grew up in DC, attended DCPS, and has experienced first hand the realities of displacement and education inequity. She attended Howard Law School and has devoted her life to public service, including serving as an Assistant Attorney General alongside DC Attorney General Karl A. Racine. Janeese has led a community-driven campaign in Ward 4 that I am so proud to be a part of. She’s earned the endorsement of Attorney General Racine, Elissa Silverman, DC’s labor community, DC’s progressive organizations, and grassroots organizations like Black Lives Matter and Sanctuary DMV. Janeese is a policy expert with a working-class background who is running a people-powered campaign that could change the face of the Council.
What to do: If you live in Ward 4, vote for Janeese! No matter where you live, sign up to make calls, send texts, or volunteer for Janeese outside voting centers (with social distancing).
