Last week, I learned that a book club will be reading the Laguna Bay Midlife Witch Cozy Mystery series, which was such a lovely surprise. But when they asked me for a list of reader questions they could use to guide their discussion—oh, dear, sweet friends—I panicked.
I’d never put together book club discussion questions for this series!
So, for the past few days, I’ve been doing my best to remedy that oversight, and I’ve come up with the list below.
But before I send it off, I’d love to know what you think. Have I included enough variety for book club members to pick and choose the questions that interest them most? Are there other kinds of questions you’d like to discuss if you were reading one of my books with a group?
I wrote these specifically with Candy, Cauldrons, and a Corpse in mind, figuring that most book clubs discovering the Laguna Bay series would probably start with the first book. But I’d love your thoughts on that too.
Here’s what I’ve come up with so far…
Boo has a complicated relationship with the tarot—how does her fear of the cards reflect her fear of confronting the past? Do you think she was right to draw again?
Kheppy reveals her true identity late in the story. Did you suspect there was more to her than met the eye? How did her transformation change your understanding of her character?
Mallory’s motive is tied to long-held resentment and regret. Do you think she ever saw herself as the villain, or just someone trying to survive?
Sissy’s confession raises big questions about love, loyalty, and guilt. Why do you think she took the blame for Ryan? What would you have done in her shoes?
Boo and Merle share a complicated romantic history. What do you think makes them a good (or challenging) match? Were you rooting for their second chance?
Laguna Bay is filled with secrets and magical politics. Which supernatural community member would you most want to see get their own side story?
What role does Halloween play in the story beyond just being a seasonal backdrop? How does the holiday’s theme of transformation reflect the characters’ journeys?
I’m sending you my deepest appreciation for your help and advice in advance, but my border collie Skye wanted to send his too. Here he is enjoying a sunny afternoon on our patio when I snapped this photo. 🐾💙
TODAY’S QUESTION: I’d love to see your pets! 🐾
Cats, dogs, birds, fish, lizards—whatever you’ve got! And if you tell me their name, I’ll try to include them in an upcoming newsletter. I can’t promise I’ll be able to feature everyone, but I’ll sure try!
Thank you for spending a little of your day with me. If this newsletter brought you a little cozy joy, please click the heart at the bottom of the page to let me know.
Until next time, may your tea be warm, your clues clever, and your bookshelf always brimming with cozy, entertaining reads.
Warmly (and with pawprints),
DeAnna
