What should I be asking for in this deal? It’s the question I get asked more than any other.

Acting agents negotiating their first podcast deal. Creator agents doing their first TV contract. Performers representing themselves with no idea where to start.

The problem isn’t what you know. It’s the deal points you don’t know you’ve missed. Miss one small detail and it could become a big problem.

That’s why I’ve created the 👉 Dealmakers Deal Sheets. I’ve used them throughout my entire career and still do every day. Make sure you never miss an important deal point again.

Welcome to Ask the Agent.

I often get people reaching out asking quick-fire Agent questions, so instead of answering just to that person, I’m going to answer them here.

🤔: What should I do if a client wants to pay less commission?

An agency sets their commission rate for a reason.

It’s dictated by 3 key things:

  • The market rate

  • The service and value they can bring to the client

  • The need to ensure the talent agency can survive and thrive as a business

Agents do not charge their clients like lawyers or publicists do, which is usually ‘on the clock’ or on a retainer no matter the time spent on them or the results. Agents only get paid when their clients get paid, and 90% of the time either the job doesn’t happen, or agents deal with things that have no direct commercial return.

When a client asks to decrease their commission, it becomes a slippery slope.

Why?
