Debi Bower · Day Trips Around Rochester, New York

This week I’m headed to Sodus for a couple of research visits. I’ll be riding the Rose Lummis on Sodus Bay and touring Alasa Farms, two experiences I’ve been eager to learn more about. I’ll be taking photos, gathering notes, and exploring the area for future articles and guidebook projects. If you’ve visited either one, I’d love to hear about your experience.

I’ll also be signing books at Barnes & Noble in Webster on Sunday, June 28, from 2–4 p.m. If you’re in the area, please stop by and say hello. I’d love to hear where your summer travels have taken you.

U-Pick Cherries

The cherry harvest is one of the shortest fruit-picking seasons of the year. While most orchards begin picking in July, it’s worth keeping an eye on conditions starting in late June. Whether you’re planning to bake pies, make jam, or simply enjoy fresh fruit, these local orchards offer a chance to fill a basket straight from the tree.

Colonial Belle, Fairport

From the Erie Canal and Genesee River to Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes, boat tours offer a perspective you can’t get from shore. Whether you’re looking for a narrated cruise, a historic vessel, or a leisurely afternoon on the water, these excursions reveal a different side of the region.

Watkins Glen

The heart of Watkins Glen is a 1.5-mile-long gorge where stone pathways weave past waterfalls, bridges, and sculpted rock formations before emerging into the village. Pair the gorge with lakeside dining, nearby wineries, or a drive around Seneca Lake for a memorable summer day trip.

The final days of the nine-day Jazz Fest bring hundreds of performances to downtown Rochester, ranging from free outdoor concerts to intimate club shows. Even if you’re not a jazz fan, the festival atmosphere alone is worth experiencing.
