This past weekend, a few of us headed to San Marcos, Texas, to lead music for the Calvary 2026 Men’s Conference. It has become an annual event for us, and several other men from our church made the trek as well.

Three preachers spoke during four sessions over the two-day conference, and as usual, we had an amazing time. As each preacher spoke, I had my own copy of the Scriptures open, with a pen and notepad in hand.

I’ve followed this practice whenever the Bible is preached or taught since 1987. That’s when I began systematically taking notes in notebooks that eventually became my one24worship Journals. Before then, I often scribbled sermon or Bible study notes on church bulletins or random scraps of paper. Understandably, that method made it difficult to keep everything organized.

By using physical notebooks, however, I developed a simple way to keep track of my notes from messages. After almost 40 years of this practice, I’ve accumulated more than 50 one24worship Journals, each containing a wealth of wisdom I’ve gathered along the way.

My mother followed a similar practice, and I still have some of her sermon notes, which I treasure. In fact, I have the church bulletin and notes she took during the Sunday morning service just before she passed away.

Each time I take notes, I listen for four things:

1. What does this Scripture text and message tell me about God?

2. What does this Scripture text and message tell me about mankind?

3. From this Scripture text and message, what is at least one thing that is most important for me?
(The way I’ve come to phrase this is, “What is at least one thing that has my name on it?”)

4. And finally, if this is true, how should I change?
