Please be for real. There's nothing here holding us to the placid, pleasant path winding whimsically to some saccharine, fairytale ending that would snuff out our natural instincts by ensnaring our spirits like nets of seamen off the shores of Nova Scotia— catching wet creatures who fearfully flop when plucked from their slippery domiciles. I am a caricature of the urban mythic male, a mere shadow of the men your mother warned you to forswear. I do not want what’s in your pants, nor storybook romance. Something much less is required. While women wake and weep over lovers who absconded during sweet slumber, you can rest easy it will be breakfast for one! I’ll be leaving tonight after dinner! I am just a cuddle whore. Nothing less, nothing more. Take your eyes off of your door, because I'm gone. I'm gone, and I'm not comin' back. No, I don't want a kiss, or somesuch bullshit gesture, I need spooning and hugging that reminds me that my blood runs hot— no, cold! Ice-cold, burnt by the freezer where I stuffed my embittered soul. But now I sound like those bratty, selfish kids, wearing sweaters in summer, claiming it's because their once-hot hearts are frozen over. Snots sulking, sneering over indie bands who got a record deal, while common sense says they sold out by merely existing. Everyone sells out. We wear thin for low wage. We believe we’ll only find our rest in a monogamy mahogany or oak cage. Don't believe the hype we're fed, free will is not a gift. In fact it might just be a grift, but I’ll still exercise that shit. Cloaked curs code creation, built walls with luscious lies. Our eyes will not bear witness to the orange sunset— Arizona dusk denied. Breathe your cobwebs, inhale the dust— remnants, hair, dead skin, your pieces lying peacefully on fan blades, baseboards, and sills. Please know you were just a heartbeat, a warm body, on a cold, lonely night in a dark room. I desired your… presence. I do not crave your prison. I choose the danger— fly! I am just a cuddle whore. Nothing less, nothing more. Don't keep standing by your door. I'm really gone. I swear, I'm gone! I'm never comin' back...
Author’s Note: I am not the speaker. The poem’s protagonist was inspired by an amalgamation of a men I knew in college.
