Let’s begin today’s fabulous festival of fun with another WNBA Update:
That’s right: The WNBA task force made up of team general managers and presidents met on Wednesday and could not agree to a definition of what that “W” in the league’s name actually stands for. So, to be clear here, 30 years after the garbage basketball league was founded in 1996, its’ highest executives have developed a joint case of amnesia over why it was created to begin with.
Incredible.
I can tell you what it meant in 1996: It stood for “Women’s,” as in the Women’s National Basketball League. The league was created during the latter stages of the congressional and court battles over the meaning and enforcement of Title IX of the Civil Rights Act. That’s the part of the law that demands the affording of equal rights in athletics at all levels for…wait for it…WOMEN.
