From Mars to the Metaverse: A Glimpse of 2029

This might sound bold—or even pessimistic—but I believe we’re all underestimating the scale and speed of the technological changes coming in the next 4-5 years. Many of us assume the future will unfold much like the past decade: incremental improvements, predictable trends, and time to adapt. But it won’t. The next wave of innovation will fundamentally alter how we live and interact with the world—which can be scary and cool all at the same time!

Figures like Elon Musk and others in tech leadership seem to grasp the magnitude of what’s ahead. My hope is that government leaders like president-elect Trump can balance free-market innovation with ethical guardrails to ensure we navigate these transformations wisely. What’s at stake isn’t whether these technologies will arrive—they’re coming. The question is: how pervasively will they integrate into our lives, and how prepared are we for the changes ahead? My proposition is that few people are really ready for this.

What’s crazy is that it will happen so fast. By the time my son graduates from college in four years, we’ll likely be living in a world radically different from the one we know today. For the sake of time and readability, I’ve condensed my thoughts into summaries of what life could be like in 2029.

1. Mars Colonization: A Generational Milestone

We may see the first tangible steps toward colonizing Mars. According to Elon Musk, SpaceX will deliver and assemble the initial components of a livable habitat on the Red Planet within the next few years. While Mars colonization might not solve immediate problems here on Earth, it will ignite a generational sense of possibility, similar to the moon landing in the 1960s. Imagine the excitement and global focus as humanity lays the groundwork for inhabiting another world. It’s not just about survival—it’s about creating a vision for what’s possible.

2. AI-Powered Robots: From Fiction to Reality

Soon, millions of households may host fully autonomous, AI-powered robots like Tesla’s Optimus. These robots, expected to be mass-produced in Austin, Texas, will integrate advanced AI models, persistent Starlink connectivity, and near-human cognitive abilities.

For around $20,000–$30,000, these machines will not only clean your home but adapt to your routines, learn your preferences, and even engage in meaningful conversation. Picture coming home after a long day and playing a board game or having a normal conversation with your robot—an experience many of us once thought belonged solely to science fiction.

The future isn’t decades away; it’s on your doorstep.

3. Transhumanism: Enhancing Humanity

Transhumanism—the fusion of biology and technology—will push the boundaries of what it means to be human. Neural implants are already helping disabled individuals regain functionality, and these technologies are rapidly expanding to new use cases.

Transhumanists envision a world where aging, disease, and cognitive limits are optional. CEOs in this space have even suggested that people born today could live for 1,000 years. While that may sound far-fetched, the next four years will likely introduce the first generation of “transhumans”—individuals augmented by technology to enhance their capabilities.

4. Augmented Reality: A New Layer to Life

Augmented reality (AR) will transform how we interact with both our physical and digital worlds. By overlaying digital elements onto real-world environments, AR will revolutionize everyday experiences.

In churches, for instance:

  • Wayfinding: AR glasses could guide visitors through complex buildings with floating arrows or signs.

  • Interactive Displays: Missionary updates, event registrations, and donation stations could appear as virtual overlays, offering dynamic engagement.

  • Lyrics in Worship: During services, lyrics could appear directly in your field of vision—perfect for those seated far from the main screen.

At home, AR might display house numbers, provide virtual photo galleries, or project interactive dashboards in your car. While full adoption may take until 2029, the groundwork for these technologies is already being laid. By investing in AR glasses, users will benefit from these innovations as they mature.

5. Virtual Reality: Redefining Spaces

Unlike AR, virtual reality (VR) immerses users entirely in digital environments. With the help of generative AI, VR will soon reshape how we experience our surroundings.

Imagine sitting in your living room, putting on a VR headset, and watching your space transform. Walls could display digital art or family photos, and your furniture might appear custom-crafted to suit a rustic or modern aesthetic. Looking out your “windows,” you might see a beach, a forest, or any environment you choose.

While VR is currently associated with gaming, its potential to redefine our living spaces and offer personalized, immersive environments is just beginning to unfold. There are tons of other use cases, particularly around the immobile, that will enrich our lives in unexpected, beautiful way.

6. Artificial Intelligence: The Rise of AGI and Digital Twins

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) will surpass human problem-solving abilities, tackling complex societal challenges while introducing ethical dilemmas. Governments and private companies alike will race to harness AI’s potential, but the risks are profound.

One concerning development is the emergence of “digital twins”—virtual replicas of individuals created from vast troves of personal data. These twins could influence decisions about you without your knowledge or control, leading to ethical questions about privacy, autonomy, and the role of AI in governance.

AI won’t be banned or slowed down; it will only grow more ubiquitous. More entrenched in our lives. The challenge lies in aligning this technology with human values before its power outpaces our ability to manage it.

Final Thoughts: Hope Beyond Technology

While these advancements promise incredible convenience and innovation, they won’t address humanity’s deepest needs. Loneliness, purpose, and meaning remain unsolved by AI, AR, or robotics. Technology can enhance our lives but not fulfill our souls.

As we prepare for a world of unprecedented technological change, it’s crucial to remember what technology cannot provide: eternal truth, purpose, and redemption. While innovation accelerates, faith endures.

We are fundamentally creatures made in the image of our Creator-God, designed to reflect His ability to create, innovate, and harness the potential of the world around us. The pinnacle of expressing His image lies in our capacity to engage with Creation and re-create in ways that mirror His ingenuity and creativity—His perfect balance of form and function. These technological advancements—Mars colonization, AI, AR, and beyond—are not inherently bad. They are the natural outworking of that God-given capacity to create. However, as with all things touched by fallen humanity, they carry the risk of being twisted and misused. It is our responsibility to steward these tools wisely, aligning them with God’s purpose rather than our own ambitions.
