My Un-Viral Health Routine

Davida Lederle · Logging Off

The other day, I wrote about the collapse of the wellness industry’s performance. I wrote about how we spent a decade curating, filtering, and aestheticizing our health, only to have the script flipped by a prescription drug.

But after I hit publish, I realized I left a question unanswered: If I’m not doing that anymore -if I’m not color-coordinating my smoothies to my activewear or obsessing over my biometrics- what am I actually doing?

The truth is, my “wellness routine” today would have gotten me fired as an influencer in 2016. It is decidedly un-viral.

Working out with my school drop off sweats still on and Christmas socks …in February.

I spent years highly motivated by numbers. Health was a math problem to be solved. When I finally released myself from that grip (much of which you saw in the archives of The Healthy Maven), I swung hard in the other direction. I allowed myself the freedom to enjoy everything because for so long, I had restricted everything. That pendulum swing was necessary. I needed to unlearn the rules to find my center.

I think I found some version of that center around 2019. But then, like most of you, my life was thrown into chaos. First came the pandemic, then our impending fertility struggles, followed by five years of growing humans, birthing them, and nursing them.

Only now, as I come up for air, do I feel like I am discovering a new center.

My “why” has shifted entirely. It is no longer about how I look in a mirror; it is about the two little beings who deeply depend on me. I have a responsibility to them to be as healthy and capable as I can be. I need to be here for them, not just physically present, but functional and energetic for as long as I possibly can.

At the same time, I am wholly aware that even those who optimize their health perfectly can still be struck by lightning. Bad luck exists. That realization informed a lot of my swing from “you have to be perfect” to “it’s a free for all.”

But here is what I also know: The health choices we make affect the quality of our life right now. And I have two young kids I want to keep up with.

If you’re curious about the specifics, here is what my routine actually looks like now.
