On this past Earth Day, I had the honor of delivering the keynote at The Walt Disney Company's Earth Day event at 7 Hudson Square — their NYC headquarters, which is double LEED Platinum certified and one of the greenest buildings in the city.
Rick Fedrizzi presented the LEED plaque award. Rick, Mike Italiano, and I co-founded the U.S. Green Building Council 33 years ago. Standing in the company’s Great Room, watching the plaques presented for our highest rated building level that wouldn't exist without the movement we started — that was a full-circle moment.
Walt Disney said in 1950 that "Conservation isn't just the business of a few people. It's a matter that concerns all of us."
He also coined the term "plussing", the belief that no matter how good something is, it can always be better.
He applied it to Disneyland and Imagineering. I apply it to green building and civilization: we've come far, but we can always do better.
I came home inspired and grateful. And ready to plus!
