Can we get someone, please, to cover the Dolphins fight song now available everywhere

A couple of ideas intersected after the Dolphins put their fight song on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music for people to play and, no doubt, feel inspired. Or something.

The first idea was from a video of Ariana Grande singing her rendition of the kids song, “Wheels On The Bus.” This was on a Jimmy Fallon show from 2015. I don’t know why it came across a feed now. Karma?

It sounded like the most inspiring version ever of, “Wheels on The Bus.” (And who knew that song would ever have an emotional element?)

The second thing that happened: An ‘X’ follower (and hopefully future Substack reader) who calls himself, “SuppleSausage” offered a few thoughts after I tweeted something about the fight song’s new availability. SuppleSausage wrote how the Dolphins fight song, “inspires nothing when we score” and “we need something hype.” He then came with the big finish:

“Give me a Lorna Shore cover of this song (laughing-until-you-cry emoji).”

So there’s the intersection of three happenings - the multi-platform fight song, Ariana Grande’s cover, SuppleSausage’s idea. OK, the heavy metal of Lorna Shore might be a little much. But ….

Should the Dolphins get someone to cover this dated fight song?

Anyone?

And who?

It’s a hokey song. That’s part of the charm of it to some fans. I appreciate Lee Ofman writing the song in 1972 and it becoming part of the Dolphins I really do. I love how it accompanied the Undefeated Season. And then the second Super Bowl. And the 1982 Super Bowl.

And the Marino years.

And also this long, 26-year walk through the wilderness.

Tradition, institutional knowledge, loyalty to history - that’s all important. And so I’m torn a little here in writing how this song could some modern juice to it. But I’m leaning that way.

Who would you want to cover the Dolphins fight song?

Anyone?

Let me say this: I liked the franchise’s old logo of a Dolphin wearing a ‘M’ helmet jumping through a sun over the one brought about a decade ago of a modern, sleek-bodied Dolphin with a sun background.

That old logo was like the Yankee pinstripes to me. It’s not so much what it looked like. It’s what it represented. The ‘70s. Greatness. History — yes, history so long ago, too.

The Dolphins were flooded with hundreds of phone calls from fans complaining about that logo change. Just like they were when then-CEO Mike Dee tried to kick-start a tradition with Jimmy Buffett’s “Fins” being played at the end of third quarters.

And, yes, I know lots of fans want the throwback uniform for every game. (I like them but am fine with them once or twice a year. So please don’t enlist me in that cause.)

So, there’s all that to weigh with the fight song.

Do you let tradition sit - and wouldn’t it sound like hokey fun singing at a game, ‘When you say Miami, you’re talking Super Bowl’ and actually meaning it?

Do you consider a more-modern cover — and who?

Ariana Grande is taking a break from public scrutiny. So, I guess she’s out. She is from South Florida, though, and as a youth. sang the National Anthem at a Panthers game. And, if she can make “Wheels on the Bus” sound good, imagine what she’d do with, “We take the ball from goal to goal, like no one's ever seen …"
