When you sue someone for $10 billion, the court is eventually going to ask you to prove your losses. That is the exact dilemma facing Donald Trump in his defamation lawsuit against the BBC. After the BBC sought extensive financial records covering hundreds of Trump-affiliated entities, his legal team attempted to shift strategies. They amended the complaint to argue that the damage was strictly to his personal reputation—not his commercial businesses—in an effort to block financial discovery.

However, Judge Roy Altman’s latest ruling allows the amendment while leaving the final discovery decision to Magistrate Judge Lett. Crucially, the court noted that amending the complaint does not automatically eliminate the need for financial disclosures, especially since the $10 billion demand remains intact. You cannot claim massive reputational harm while keeping your finances completely off-limits.
