Playing with Contempt of Court

Donald Trump and his loyalists on the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees are playing with fire. After Federal Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that renaming the national memorial violated federal law — and the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals refused an emergency stay — the board voted 20 to 3 to try an obvious end-run around the court.

Their new plan? Keep the Kennedy Center name, but chisel “Restored and Renovated by Donald J. Trump” directly into the exterior marble and designate the grounds as “Donald J. Trump Plaza.”

Federal judges do not appreciate pretextual evasion. When an injunction orders you not to suggest the facility is named for anyone other than JFK, swapping brass letters for marble engraving is asking for contempt sanctions.
