Five business days is either five or seven calendar days, and which one you get depends entirely on the weekday it starts. Here is the full breakdown, plus what counts as a business day and when the clock really starts.
You ordered something on a Friday. The confirmation email promised five business days. It is now the following Wednesday, nothing has arrived, and you are starting to wonder whether somebody lied to you.
Nobody lied. The counting just does not work the way most people assume, and companies rarely spell out the part that would clear it up.
The short answer
Five business days means five working days, Monday through Friday, with weekends and public holidays skipped entirely. In real calendar time that lands as either five days or seven days, and which one you get depends on a single thing: the weekday the count starts on.
Start on a Monday and you finish that Friday, a clean five calendar days. Start on any other weekday and a weekend falls inside the window, so the same five business days stretch across seven calendar days.
One number that never appears is six. If a website tells you five business days is roughly six days, that site has averaged two answers together and produced a figure that cannot happen. Worth knowing when you are trying to work out whether to chase somebody up.
Business days to calendar days, by the numbers
This is the table most people actually came for. Use it to convert a promised business day window into the real wait.
| Promised time | If counting starts Monday | If counting starts any other weekday | Never |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 business days | 2 calendar days | 2 or 4 calendar days | 3 days |
| 3 business days | 3 calendar days | 3 or 5 calendar days | 4 days |
| 5 business days | 5 calendar days | 7 calendar days | 6 days |
| 7 business days | 9 calendar days | 9 or 11 calendar days | 10 days |
| 10 business days | 12 calendar days | 14 calendar days | 13 days |
The final column is there deliberately. Those are the answers you will see quoted around the web that are mathematically impossible, because the weekend either falls inside your window or it does not. There is no half a weekend.
Why Friday is the worst day to be told anything
Most policies do not count the day you placed the order. The clock starts on the next business day, which is the detail that catches people out.
So a request made at 4pm on Friday does not start counting on Friday, and it certainly does not count Saturday or Sunday. Business day one is Monday. Everything shifts from there.
| You are told this on a Friday | Counting starts | You actually get it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 business day | Monday | Monday |
| 2 business days | Monday | Tuesday |
| 3 business days | Monday | Wednesday |
| 5 business days | Monday | Friday, a full week later |
| 10 business days | Monday | Friday of the week after next |
That is why a Friday order with a five business day promise does not arrive until the following Friday. Seven calendar days have passed, the customer feels misled, and the company has technically kept its word. Both parties are right, which is what makes the argument so annoying.
If timing genuinely matters to you, ask one question: does the clock start today or tomorrow? It is a small thing that changes the answer by a full day.
What actually counts as a business day
A business day is a day when normal commercial operations run. In practice that means Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.
Is Saturday a business day?
No, not in the United States, the UK, Canada, Australia or most of Europe. Some banks open on Saturday morning for counter service, and plenty of shops trade all weekend, but neither of those makes Saturday count toward a business day deadline.
This is not universal, though. Several countries in the Middle East run a Sunday to Thursday working week, which means Friday and Saturday are their weekend. If you are dealing with a supplier or bank across borders, the two of you may be counting different days without either side noticing.
Do public holidays count?
No, and this is where deadlines quietly slip. Each public holiday inside your window pushes the finish date out by one more calendar day.
Which holidays apply depends entirely on location. A US company observing Thanksgiving and a UK customer who has never heard of it as a day off will calculate the same five business days differently, and both will be correct for their own calendar. Late November and late December are the worst offenders, because holidays cluster there.
What about half days and office hours?
A business day is a day, not a shift. If a company closes at noon on Christmas Eve, that is still usually counted as a business day for deadline purposes even though almost nothing got done. Separately, some processes are cut off by a daily deadline: a bank transfer submitted at 6pm is often treated as the next day's work, which silently costs you a day.
The conversions people look up next
Five business days is exactly one working week. Ten business days is two working weeks, which is where the common two week refund window comes from.
In working hours, five business days is 40 hours at a standard eight hour day. As elapsed time it is either 120 or 168 clock hours, which is a very different number and the reason estimates in hours and estimates in business days rarely line up.
| Period | Business days | How it is worked out |
|---|---|---|
| One week | 5 | Monday to Friday |
| One month | About 21.7 | 260 working days divided across 12 months |
| One quarter | About 65 | 13 weeks at 5 days |
| One year | 260 | 52 weeks at 5 days, before holidays |
| One year after holidays | About 250 | Assuming around 10 public holidays |
That 21.7 figure surprises people who expect a round number. Months do not contain a fixed count of weekdays, so anything monthly has to use an average or count the real calendar. If you need the exact figure for a specific month, count it rather than estimating.
How to work out your own date without the guesswork
The reliable method is to count forward on an actual calendar, skipping Saturdays, Sundays and any public holidays that apply where the work is being done.
Three things to settle first, because getting any of them wrong throws the whole answer out:
- Does the count start today or the next working day? Most policies say the next working day.
- Whose holidays apply, yours or theirs? Use the calendar of wherever the work is happening, not where you are sitting.
- Is there a daily cut off time? Anything submitted after it usually rolls to the next business day.
Once you have those three answers, the counting itself is mechanical, which is exactly the sort of job worth handing to a tool. The business days calculator counts working days between two dates or adds a number of business days to a starting date, with US and UK public holidays applied automatically. If you only need the raw gap including weekends, the days between two dates tool gives you that instead.
The mistake worth avoiding
The single most common error is treating business days and calendar days as roughly interchangeable and adding a couple of days for safety. The padding covers a short window and quietly fails on a long one.
Ten business days sounds like it should be somewhere near a fortnight. It is a fortnight, and then a bit more, because two full weekends sit inside it. Over a holiday period it can run past two and a half weeks. Anyone planning a deadline off a rough mental estimate ends up either chasing too early or missing the moment to escalate.
So when a contract, refund policy or shipping estimate is written in business days, count it as business days. The difference is small on a two day promise and genuinely large on a thirty day one.
Frequently asked questions
How long is 5 business days?
Five business days is five calendar days if the count starts on a Monday, and seven calendar days if it starts on any other weekday. It is never six. Public holidays push it out further, one calendar day per holiday.
Is 5 business days the same as 7 days?
Often, yes. If the count starts on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, five business days spans exactly seven calendar days because one weekend falls inside it. Only a Monday start gives you a clean five days.
How long is 3 business days?
Three calendar days if counting starts Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Five calendar days if it starts Thursday or Friday, because the weekend lands in the middle.
How long is 10 business days?
Twelve calendar days from a Monday start, and fourteen from any other weekday start. Two weekends fall inside a ten business day window either way.
Is Saturday a business day?
Not in the United States, the UK, or most of Europe, where the standard working week runs Monday to Friday. Some banks open Saturday mornings for counter service, but that does not usually make Saturday count toward a business day deadline. Parts of the Middle East run a Sunday to Thursday week instead, so the exclusion moves.
Do public holidays count as business days?
No. A public holiday is skipped the same way a weekend is, and each one adds another calendar day to the wait. Which holidays apply depends on the country and sometimes the state, which is why a company in one place and a customer in another can disagree about the same deadline.
Does the day I place the order count as day one?
Usually not. Most shipping, refund and banking policies start the clock on the next business day. So an order placed on Monday afternoon typically has Tuesday as business day one, not Monday.
How many business days are in a month?
About 21.7 on average. Individual months range from roughly 20 to 23 depending on how the weekends fall and how many holidays land inside.
How many business days are in a year?
260, from 52 weeks at 5 days each. After around 10 public holidays, the practical figure is closer to 250.
How many hours is 5 business days?
Forty working hours at a standard 8 hour day. As elapsed time it is much longer, either 120 or 168 clock hours depending on which weekday the count begins.
