Kedeisha Bryan · The Data Career Insider

Data storytelling is a $250,000+ skill.

But, most aspiring analysts are simply not good at it.

They focus on the more hard skills such as:

  • SQL

  • Excel

  • Python

But, when I see their dashboards in Tableau or Power BI, they’re weak.

But, its not their fault.

Most courses ignore the proper foundations of data storytelling.

But, here is a secret: Without the story, nobody cares about the data.

So today, I’m going to explain why storytelling is the key to launching a 6-figure career in analytics.

I often tell my Data Career Launch Program students that the easiest way to stand out in today’s competitive job market is through data storytelling.

While most candidates say they are good at it, their actual work says otherwise.

And, unlike manipulating pivot tables in Excel.

Joining tables in SQL.

Or creating functions in python.

Data storytelling is both a soft and hard skill that utilizes both sides of the brain.

Where you engage the left brain for:

  • Logical reasoning

  • Analytical thinking

  • Detail-oriented tasks

The right brain for:

  • Creativity

  • Intuition

  • Emotional processing

Data analytics (tech in general) draws many analytical thinkers who find it difficult to engage their creative intuition.

Where you have to identify & empathize with your audience.

And analyze how they will process your work.

So, don’t be like the 99%.

And start getting better at storytelling.

Spreadsheets and raw data don’t drive decisions.

Insights do.

As an analyst, your value is dependent on how well you can communicate your work to decision makers:

  • Managers

  • Directors

  • Executives

They won’t be spending as much time with the data as you do.

So, even though you spend many hours:

  • Extracting the data with SQL

  • Cleaning it up in python

  • Or manipulating it in Excel

Decision makers don’t care about that.

They only care about the insights you’ve gotten from the hours of work so they can make decisions.

Which usually gets summarized in a report, dashboard, or even a slide deck presentation.

Don’t make rookie mistakes and believe everything is always obvious.

That “your work always speaks for itself”.

Without intentional storytelling, it doesn’t.

You are the bridge between the data and your stakeholders.

So, you need to tell a story to drive the actual data-driven decisions.

You can’t be a good senior data analyst without the ability to tell a good story.

You can’t be a good manager without the ability to tell a good story.

You can’t be a good director without the ability to tell a good story.

See the pattern?

Our career growth depends on it

The higher you climb in your career, the more crucial storytelling becomes.

Because at each level:

  • More stakeholders rely on your insights

  • Bigger decisions rest on your analysis

  • Complex problems need clear explanations

The numbers tell you what happened. But the story tells everyone why they should care.

And in this competitive market, that's what makes all the difference.
