Why Tolerance Is Not the Highest Virtue (And What Jesus Offers Instead)

There is a word our culture hands out like a virtue medal, and I want to spend this essay lowering its price. The word is tolerance. Be tolerant. Teach your kids tolerance. Zero tolerance for intolerance. Most of us hear the word and feel a low hum of obligation, as if tolerance were obviously the summit of moral achievement and every decent person is climbing toward it.

I want to make two claims that sound like they cannot both be true. First: tolerance, as our culture now defines it, is philosophically incoherent, and you should not aim at it. Second: the alternative is not less generous toward people who believe differently than you. It is far more generous. The alternative is love, and love makes tolerance look like a participation trophy.

Start with what tolerance used to mean, because the word has been quietly swapped out. The old tolerance was a real virtue with iron in it. It meant: I am convinced you are wrong, seriously wrong, wrong about things that matter, and I will defend your dignity anyway. I will not silence you, coerce you, or deny you a place at the table. Notice what that tolerance requires: actual disagreement. You cannot tolerate someone unless you first believe they are wrong. The old tolerance was strong medicine for a world of real difference, and Christians helped build it; the argument that faith compelled by force is no faith at all runs from Tertullian through the Baptists of the American founding.

The new tolerance is a different creature wearing the old one’s coat. D.A. Carson mapped this shift in The Intolerance of Tolerance, and his diagnosis has only aged into sharper focus. The new tolerance does not ask you to bear with people you think are wrong. It forbids you to think anyone is wrong. All beliefs are equally valid, all paths equally true, and the only remaining heresy is the claim that some belief might actually be false. Under the old tolerance, disagreement was the precondition. Under the new, disagreement is the offense.
