https://gist.github.com/gene1wood/0bd4250ffef9d57fd801d59f23433114 I like the method presented here because it is very clean. You add a new search engine to your list in Firefox settings, then make the call to google a little bit customised. The call to google in the list of search engines becomes: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d channel=entpr udm=14 q=%s And this removes the AI…
I was not happy with how grey and washy the images were. It is because the old original manual is on off-white paper. The images are greys, so can use netpbm to make them whiter and with better contrast. Here are the commands move into the folder, make a new folder, and so on. I have a bunch of PNG scans I want to make into a single PDF. Using Debian Linux. $ sudo apt update $ sudo apt ugrade -y $ sudo apt install img2pdf My file names are of the form 01.png, 02.png 12.png, named like this so that they list in the correct order. I Continue reading "Series of PNG files to a PDF"
You might think it s a bit of a gimmick, but this book does actually fill an interesting space in the literature. It does have sections on the history of the machine, as another aeroplane book might have, but it also has sections on the systems of the plane (brakes, controls, wing structure, fuel and so Continue reading "Haynes Supermarine Spitfire owners workshop manual by Price and Blackah"
Example: Canoscan N1240U. And old USB scanner that has not had Windows support for over a decade. Being driven by a community, not by profit, Linux has drivers for it. And why not? It s not like newer scanners are that much better FWIW: https://www.canon-europe.com/support/consumer/products/scanners/canoscan/series/canoscan-n1240u.html?type=drivers language=EN os=Windows%2010%20(64-bit) (no driver…
Paid for years ago, perpetual, I thought, and still highly functional, but regular registration did not work. Probably the servers at Microsoft are no longer working. Plugged in a USB CD/DVD drive and ran the installation media. Put in the key. It installed, but when I ran it it said it could not register the Continue reading "Word 2010 activation"
Great flying stories edited by Frank W Anderson Jr. An anthology of fiction and nonfiction about flying, as it was between world war 1 and about the mid 1950s. Casts a fairly wide net, and contains nice work by Lindbergh, de Saint-Exupéry and Guy Murchie (and plenty of others). The cover includes what looks like Continue reading " Great flying stories "
This is the last novel Priest published. The narrative rolls along readily enough, activities occur, mysteries are resolved, and yet in the end it does not, for me, add up to a major work. I do like the cover. The interesting things: The protagonist strikes me, from the little I know, as the most autobiographical Continue reading " Airside by Christopher Priest"
This edition of this history book came out in 1926. It s quite a handsome volume. At this time, Europe was still a (possibly the ) powerful force shaping all corners of the world to suit itself. World War One had knocked Europe down and, relatively speaking, lifted the USA, Japan and some other countries up, but Continue reading " Medieval and modern times by J H Robinson"
This is the Ace original paperback from the early 1980s. There are 2 books called Viriconium nights. This is the one that includes a novelette called In Viriconium , which is a shorter version of the novel of the same name. It s my favourite piece in the book, which I guess is good because it s the longest. Continue reading " Viriconium nights M. John Harrison"
