Most student-athletes want to know where they’ll be going to college and competing in their sport early, and want more and more assurances that they’ll have a place to continue their athletic career at the college level - something that is less of a guarantee now in some sports and at some division levels, thanks to the NCAA Transfer Portal and roster limits.

One problem on your side of this process as a coach, of course, is that your process isn’t always set up for early decisions: Either your school doesn’t get it’s admissions and award packages out soon enough, or you’re offering a full ride scholarship and need more time to evaluate the prospect’s development as a student-athlete, or a combination of the two…

Every college coach has a recruiting board. And on that board, there are different levels of prospects.

There are the recruits you’d take today. There are the recruits you really like, but still need to keep evaluating. There are the recruits who are talented, interested, and realistic, but maybe aren’t quite at the top of your list yet. And then there are the recruits you’re still trying to figure out. It’s a mix of your vision, who you have targeted, and the strategy outline that you think will get you there.
