There’s an old sales technique called “Feel, Felt, Found.”
You’ve probably heard some version of it before.
“I understand how you feel.”
“Other people have felt the same way.”
“Here’s what they found after they looked at it more closely.”
It’s been taught in sales training for decades because, at its core, it works. But the problem is that it often sounds exactly like you think a sales technique would sound when people use it too much of the time…you can almost hear the gears turning as the salesperson waits for you to finish talking so they can deliver the three lines they memorized during some big corporate training seminar.
That version isn’t very useful in recruiting.
The principle behind it, though, is something I think every college coach should understand and utilize - because your recruits, just like the average customer in a sales situation - needs to be redirected, and wants to be redirected…
