Parallel lines never meet. A line in the sand lasts only until the tide. America today is something worse: an oxymoron pretending to be a republic.
We call ourselves a democracy, yet tolerate leaders who flirt openly with autocracy. We pledge liberty, then cheer as armored troops aim rifles at civilians. We chant “law and order,” while the law itself bends to whichever politician shouts loudest.
And the marauders? They are oxymorons made flesh. Patriots who trample the Constitution. Defenders of order who thrive on chaos. January 6th was their parade: waving the flag as they tried to burn it down. The barbarians at the gate didn’t just break through; they now sit inside, sworn in, enthroned, unrepentant.
History offers their shadows: the hoods of the KKK, the torch-bearers of Charlottesville, the Brown Shirts of Nazi Germany. Violence dressed as virtue is civilization’s oldest oxymoron. We promised ourselves we’d learned. And yet here we are.
But here is the coldest truth: the courts will not save us. The Constitution cannot enforce itself. We are outgunned. Believing that violence will redeem democracy is the greatest oxymoron of all.
Which leaves only one path. Not easy. Not safe. But the only one left. Nonviolence. Bodies in the streets, on weekdays, in every city. A general strike of conscience, halting commerce and shutting down the machine. Millions of us sitting down until the system can no longer pretend to function.
Make no mistake: there will be blood in the streets. Power never yields without it. The only question is whether that blood is spilled in armed conflict we cannot win—or in peaceful sacrifice that exposes tyranny for what it is.
We will either sit down in peace, or be cut down in violence. Those are the lines in the sand. And the tide is already rising.
