Back from London, Amsterdam and a cruise of the British Isles where most of what I heard was nostalgic music perfectly programmed for those of a certain age wanting get back in touch with their younger selves. I count myself as part of that group but unlike a lot of my contemporaries I still look for new music every week. Today I’m highlighting a song by an artist who has been around making music for a quarter century and two other more recent artists who have joined together with an interesting dance/rock track. Let’s dig in!
Never Said No – Pete Yorn
A few weeks back I highlighted Yorn’s song Idyllwild from his new album All the Beauty. Never Said No is the first track on the album and it’s a solid mid-tempo rocker. The lyrics might be simple and catchy but Yorn along with co-producer and multi-instrumentalist Jackson Phillips master the production with infectious guitar and drum work. It reminds me of some of my favorite Yorn songs from his past catalog while also feeling fresh and worthy of a mellow kick back listen.
Hot Blooded (Rose City Rework) – New Constellations & STRFKR
While I was unfamiliar with it, this song was originally released by New Constellations as a single in 2021. That version has an electronic vibe which is slower paced than this reworking by fellow Portland Oregon band STRFKR which turns it into a fast-paced, hypnotic, pop/dance track. Lead vocalist Harlee Case really shines on this one. Her voice is reminiscent of early Aimee Mann and her 80s band ‘Til Tuesday. New Constellations’ debut album was released in May with the original version of Hot Blooded but this remixed single is definitely worth checking out.
