Under-the-Radar 003 - Lenny Agbaire

Standing out a physical looking centre back at 1.94m in the Celtic youth team. Lenny Agbaire was first to everything, dominant against a Feyenoord U19’s which included the likes of Givairo Read and Shaqueel van Persie in a UEFA Youth League game played at Lesser Hampden.

I remember asking the Celtic scout “what’s your plans for him” after saying “he looks ready to me”… “First team football” was the reply, “by next year he should break through”.

The Croydon born defender earned himself a two year contract with the Hoops in 2024 but never did break through. I often kept my eyes out for him, as I expected Agbaire to be more than good enough to be playing Scottish Premiership football by now.

For whatever reason it didn’t happen. At nineteen years old he was sent on loan to Ayr United where Agbaire was called “a Rolls Royce” playing 16 games and scoring once in the 2024/25 campaign, before moving back south of the border last summer, to Rotherham United, for an undisclosed fee, a three year contract issued, but an injury hit season limited his games to 18 in League One, as Rotherham were relegated with Agbaire out of action for the all important final few weeks of the season.

Big, powerful, Lenny Agbaire is a presence and a real combative centre half who reminds you of an old fashioned style man-marker from back in the day. Right footed, he reads the game well and heads and kicks like centre backs should, he’s a threat in the opposition box and times his leaps well, but it’s in defensive duals where he excels and gets to enforce his power and presence on opposition attackers.

He will look for the odd diagonal but distribution isn’t his strong point, he can kick it firmly but perhaps doesn’t have the finer finesse of a top level playmaker from the back, which is why he’s probably in the division he is, but he’s not afraid to run forward with the ball and his combative nature will often cause havoc.

As defenders go, he certainly has the right attributes for the level he’s now at, he has the qualities perhaps to be at one or two levels higher indeed, an honest and committed footballer who last year won his first call up to the Scottish under 21 side, if he stays free of injury this season, those call ups may even lead to him winning his first cap.

How Does He Fit In?

Relegated from League One, Rotherham United will start life in League Two under a new regime, as Alex Bruce comes in as Head Coach with former England Manager Steve McClaren as Head of Football. There’s been a few changes at the New York Stadium and this summer, has been about getting all the new faces to gel, with some out, more to come, it’s difficult to say what formation Rotherham will play, but Bruce likes his pace out wide and his attackers with technique and skill, in defence however it seems to be a bit more straight forward.

In friendlies against Alfreton and Matlock Town, Agbaire partnered the left footed Emmanuel Adegboyega who is a similar robust, solid looking, no frills enforcer, both doing well against very game but lighter-in-weight opponents.

If indeed Rotherham rely on this partnership to build their base upon, as long as Agbaire (and Adegboyega) stay injury free, I predict that the Millers could have a very good season indeed with two tasty looking twins of first and foremost, old-skool no-nonsense defensive quality.

Form & Future…

Staying clear of injury after a stop start season previous which ended in relegation is key towards the progression of Agbaire’s promising looking career.

Promoted Bromley have already been keen to take on the 21-year-old should Rotherham at any point want to cash in and they’ll be no doubt plenty more interest in the player from the division above, a league which Agbaire adjusted to well in his first spell at the level, despite his team around him not being so good.

This season with new team-mates, a new management team, a team predicted to do well, I think we’ll see the real version of a player who’s potential is yet to be reached.

I’ll be keeping my eyes out to see if Rotherham do well, because if they do well, no doubt a huge part of that will be helped by the form of Lenny Agbaire, and if he is playing well, then they’ll be no shortage of interest from the teams in England of leagues above.
