Under-the-Radar 001 - Jayden Luker

Jayden Luker is a talented attacking midfielder who is aged 21 years old. After impressing in a match against the youth side of Luton Town for the Pro Direct Academy, the retail giants own self-described pathway to success for youngsters, in 2022, Luker was signed by the Hatters, and in 2023 made the first team bench in the FA Cup at Wigan Athletic, but is still yet to make his mark, having been at Kenilworth Road now for four years.

Luker joined National League side Woking on loan in 2024 where he played 17 times (scoring twice) as an eighteen year old, before a spell at Grimsby Town the following season, doing well at Blundell Park for a team that finished League Two in eighth position.

After playing 26 league and cup games (scoring 3 goals) for the Mariners, Luker joined Notts County last season and helped the Magpies to achieve promotion to League One, appearing in the playoff final at Wembley verses Salford City, but the young loanees campaign was largely ruined by injury, Luker playing 17 times scoring 3 goals in all competitions, but left Meadow Lane with his head held high after earning positive reviews from those who watched him play.

At 6ft he stands tall and lean and plays with elegance, ideally in the ten role where he can pick up possession in pockets and make things happen. A lovely left footed footballer he likes to cut inside and shoot from the inside right position, and can stand a ball up to the back post with flight, he also has the knack of scrapping for bits inside the box, which allows him to contribute in goals.

In just 365 league minutes played at Notts County last season he scored twice and directly assisted three goals, in the year previous at Grimsby, he achieved similar stats, 3 goals and 2 assists whilst used largely as a right midfielder.

How Does He Fit in?

The problem Luker has at Luton Town is the Hatters play a 4-2-3-1 system and standing in the players way is the experienced Kasey Palmer, who will be one of the best number 10’s in League One this season.

Luker is probably best fit into that central role but can certainly play out wide, although Manager Jack Wilshere prefers direct pace with Shayden Morris ending the last season well wide right, on the left this year looks to be the recent capture from West Ham United, Gideon Kodua, last season Luton had the explosiveness of Manchester City loanee Emilio Lawrence in that place.

One position which Luker can make his own is on that wide right side where he challenges Morris, or even teenager Jake Richards, for a starting spot, but it is centrally long term where I see Luton (or anyone else) getting the best out of him.

Form & Future…

Luker scored and impressed in a pre-season draw with Barnet on Saturday and he looks in good shape ahead of the campaign, the key question is, can he finally break into this Luton Town first team and make his Hatters debut? He’s done it now in League Two on loan, can he step up a division higher, and make himself a name?

The trick is that Luton have a competitive squad with a lot of quality, and the Hatters will be pushing for promotion this season, if he can budge himself into a Management selection headache, he has every chance of persuading Jack Wilshere to use his assets to advantage, but if not, I can’t help feeling they’ll be a whole host of clubs at the level, or one below, who’ll be keen to take him in.
