Hi horny readers! Thank you so, so much for reading ADULT SEX ED, a newsletter about the stories behind our sexual beliefs—where they came from, who invented them, and why they stuck.
I’m Dani Faith Leonard, a filmmaker, writer, and performer. A while back, I started to ask myself a question: why do we think what we think about sex? Expect investigative articles, weird sex history, and sharp humor, delivered to your inbox every week. Ready to plug the holes in your education? Okay, let’s go!
I teamed up for a Substack Live yesterday with Danielle Bezalel from the popular podcast Sex Ed with DB to talk about The Invention of “Female Problems.” For centuries, women have been sold products they never needed.
What does advertising have to do with sex ed? What is a “female problem”? What’s the history of marketing things like pads, tampons, and douches?
As you know, digging into history is a passion of mine. This was a really fun way to kick off the summer and I loved interacting with you in the chat. Here’s a replay:
This Summer, I’d like to experiment more with the format of Adult Sex Ed. Of course, I’m working on some new topics, including a dissection of “bodycount” culture, and a deep dive into an historic medical procedure. I’m also adding a few new articles into the Extreme Sex series on the overlap between sex and extremism (if you missed that, you can read the first one here).
What would you like to see? Please cast your vote in the poll below or feel free to leave a comment.
I’m going to take the next week off and we’ll be back on July 15th!
Dani
