Painted Lady
Yesterday, I found a Painted Lady feeding on the nectar from our newly planted Buddleia bush. Olympus OM1-II with 40-150 f/2.8 Pro and MC-14.
Don't look up

Last night we drove out to the coast with plans to try and capture lightning sprites from a forecasted MCS over the Netherlands. If the MCS went to plan, and we had clear skies in between us, then we should have been within ideal sprite capturing range (100-200 miles). Typically things didn't quite go as hoped for, too much cloud from janky showers and lethargic storms blocked our view to the…
The heat and humidity has been intense over the last week. My back garden weather station has been recording 36c temperatures with dew points reaching 24c. For the UK that is ridiculous. It's actually quite unbearable at times but if it means I get an opportunity for some night time lightning, then I'll just about suffer it. It had been over a year since I last had a decent night time storm. I was…
A nearly severe thunderstorm approaching Swindon, UK yesterday. I say nearly as I didn't see any hail, notice any strong wind gusts or read any reports to suggest otherwise. For a 'homegrown' UK storm it had a brief but somewhat photogenic shelf cloud for a while. Update: I have not had the best luck with creating pano images before but this actually turned out quite nice.
I took a gamble on some Noctilucents reappearing last night with a 40 minute drive out to the coast, and then a 20 minute walk to find a clear view of the Northern horizon. There is never any guarantee the clouds will show up, but I have read many reports that the summer solstice brings more activity. I'm not really sure why, or if there is a genuine scientific reason for that, and perhaps its…
Luckily it was too warm to sleep last night, as I'm not sure I would have made the effort to go see these storms otherwise. These are distant thunderstorms near Lille in France. That's at least 150 miles to my South East, so I'm quite amazed the skies were clear enough to capture some distant lightning. I was actually hoping to photograph some [sprites](…
Last night (June 9th), at around 11pm, I had my first sighting of the elusive Noctilucent clouds for 2026. Not the brightest or longest display, though I'll happily take it. I'm not sure I have the motivation for the ~02:30 displays, but we'll see how that goes.
A very enjoyable day spent dodging the rain and shooting the drifting action from the Gassed on Track event at Silverstone. This is part three (of three), part one images can be viewed here and part two, here. Images shot with OM1-II, 40-150 f/2.8 & MC-14.
