Rolling the Dice in MAGA’s America

Danielle Moodie, THE LEFT HOOK with Wajahat Ali · The DAM Digest

There is a striking contrast between life in countries with functional public health systems and life in the United States today. Abroad, you can enjoy fresh produce and take basic public health measures for granted—from routine vaccinations to unadulterated food. Meanwhile, in the United States, citizens are left rolling the dice on their health every time they buy groceries or step outside.

The stark reality is that the United States is rapidly regressing. Through systematic deregulation, corporate capture of regulatory bodies, and a relentless anti-science agenda, public health, safety, and basic democratic norms are being dismantled piece by piece.

The promise of a modern nation includes a simple guarantee: the food supply should not make you sick. Yet, across America, access to safe, fresh produce is systematically eroding.

  • Widespread Recalls: From recalled eggs due to salmonella to mass recalls of leafy greens, jalapeños, salsa, and guacamole, consumers are facing an unprecedented wave of contamination.

  • The Rise of Parasitic Outbreaks: Outbreaks of parasites like Cyclospora have expanded across dozens of states, leading to severe illnesses and fatalities, particularly among vulnerable populations with underlying conditions.

  • Deregulation and Loopholes: Breaking news highlights efforts by figures like RFK Jr. targeting long-standing regulatory frameworks. A primary target is the “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS) designation—a legal loophole allowing food manufacturers to self-certify the safety of chemical additives without prior government notification or rigorous oversight.

When oversight is stripped away, agribusinesses are given carte blanche to cut corners in quality control to maximize profit margins. The consumer is left with an illusion of choice: whether you shop at discount chains or high-end grocery stores, much of the supply originates from the exact same corporate monopolies—carrying the exact same risks.

A central talking point of modern conservative ideology is the demand for “small government.” However, the actual application of this concept reveals a stark double standard.

The federal agencies designed to protect citizens—such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)—are being actively undermined. When the leadership of a public health body explicitly shifts focus away from tracking infectious diseases and parasites toward monitoring personal healthcare choices, the core mission of public care is abandoned.

“Big government” is required to maintain clean air, safe water, and disease prevention. Stripping away these protections does not liberate citizens; it leaves them vulnerable to corporate negligence and environmental hazards.

America is witnessing the resurgence of preventable illnesses that were once considered nearly eradicated.

  • Erosion of Vaccine Trust: Escalating anti-vaccine rhetoric has driven vaccine hesitancy to record highs, leading to spikes in measles, whooping cough, and other preventable conditions.

  • Brain Drain of Expertise: Top scientific researchers, epidemiologists, and public health officials are resigning or being recruited overseas by institutions in Europe and Asia, leaving American public health infrastructure severely weakened.

  • Environmental & Climate Denial: While global record temperatures continue to rise, official policy increasingly treats climate change as a hoax. Environmental safeguards are rolled back, clean air and water initiatives are defunded, and public lands are handed over to private interests.

This combination of anti-science sentiment and environmental rollbacks functions as a pro-death policy matrix—one that sacrifices long-term human survival for short-term corporate deregulation.

The deterioration of public health runs parallel to the erosion of accountability at the highest levels of governance. Extreme financial conflicts of interest and blatant corruption have become normalized.

Consider the systemic red flags:

  1. Unchecked Financial Self-Dealing: Executive figures and their families routinely leverage public office to expand private wealth—spanning cryptocurrency ventures, energy speculation, and opaque international business deals.

  2. Banking and Money Laundering Warnings: Major financial institutions have repeatedly flagged or shuttered hundreds of private accounts tied to high-ranking officials over anti-money laundering concerns. In standard political eras, such actions would trigger major congressional investigations; today, they are buried by news cycles.

  3. The Concrete Infrastructure of Entrenchment: From physical barricades around federal landmarks to the militarization and reinforcement of executive residences, the physical landscape reflects an intent to consolidate power rather than honor democratic transitions.

When leaders build physical and legal fortresses to insulate themselves from accountability, they signal that democratic mechanisms—like elections and judicial oversight—are no longer viewed as binding limits on their power.

Why isn’t the public fully aware of the scale of this crisis? The answer lies largely in the mainstream media ecosystem.

While the nation faces food supply contamination, climate crises, and systemic financial corruption, Sunday morning talk shows and major political commentary outlets remain fixated on social media controversies, minor influencer drama, and manufactured culture wars.

By prioritizing sensationalism over substantive investigative journalism, media networks distract the electorate. Instead of demanding answers on how public safety agencies are being dismantled, reporters press public figures to disavow internet personalities. This failure of journalism allows systemic degradation to continue unchecked.

The degradation of American public health, environmental safety, and democratic integrity is not an accident—it is the direct outcome of a political strategy that prioritizes corporate profits and autocratic control over human lives.

When a society trades clean air, safe food, and public health for deregulation and unchecked greed, it forfeits its future. Reclaiming these basic rights will require an unprecedented commitment to accountability, a rejection of anti-science rhetoric, and a demand for leadership that views public well-being as a primary duty rather than a secondary concern.
