Danielle Moodie, Jared Yates Sexton · The DAM Digest

Part two of today’s Check-In on Americans and our need to numb.

The delusion that a single election cycle will magically restore democratic norms is one of the most pervasive self-soothing mechanics in modern American life. Moderates and centrists, largely insulated by their material security, routinely advise the public to “just wait,” assuring everyone that the political pendulum will naturally swing back. They insist that making deals with moderate conservatives is the only path forward, all while framing any structural critique from the left as dangerous or absurd. Yet history demonstrates that this exact strategy—passive waiting paired with the appeasement of right-wing elements—is precisely how authoritarian capture succeeds.

This dynamic relies heavily on collective dissociation. Millions of people exist in an unexamined state where systemic failures are treated as bizarre, isolated anomalies rather than predictable outcomes. When contaminated food hits grocery shelves, when extreme heat waves paralyze cities, or when public health infrastructure is systematically dismantled, the dominant narrative frames these events as random bad luck. In reality, they are the direct product of a state machine being stripped for parts—agencies gutted, oversight inspectors fired, and public safeguards abandoned in favor of corporate deregulatory agendas.

This disconnection is neither accidental nor entirely organic. For decades, major tech platforms and corporate entities have engineered an environment where numbing oneself is not just normalized, but actively incentivized. Algorithmic echo chambers keep individuals isolated within curated bubbles, detaching them from shared physical realities and replacing civic engagement with passive consumption. Dissociation serves an evolutionary purpose—it allows human beings to survive overwhelming trauma or abusive environments. But when adopted as a default political posture, it transforms an electorate into passive onlookers to their own disenfranchisement.

Breaking out of this pattern requires stepping away from comfortable, self-soothing fictions. Both major political factions remain deeply entangled with the financial interests building data centers, expanding surveillance networks, and funding militarized detention facilities. Statements of concern or legislative letters do nothing to halt the momentum of political and economic extraction.

The first step toward meaningful resistance is confronting material conditions as they actually exist. True agency begins when individuals reject the soothing promise that someone else is coming to save them, cultivate physical and political presence, and demand a system built on genuine human dignity rather than managed decay.
