The Death of Copyright: Why Authors and Publishers Must Embrace the Post-IP Revolution

All the big publishers are frantically trying to figure out how to protect their IP from going into these LLMs, but I do not think IP is the moat anymore. I think it is more about how technologies are integrated with that IP.

Up to this point there has been so much focus on copyright ownership in the publishing and media industries. We are soon reaching a point where that will be a non-factor because all content will exist for free inside of all large language models. Now, it is more about how that content is used within the context of those LLMs.

The same shift that happened inside of the music industry will happen inside every type of publishing — especially books. The music industry fought for a decade to retain ownership of their songs only to lose to streaming media. The publishing industry will fight for a long time to retain copyright over things (because that is all they have) and they are still gonna lose. It is inevitable.

This does not mean an individual author cannot make money off of their work anymore, but it means that as soon as that work is out in the marketplace, it can be used by anybody to create something new. These forces will be unstoppable.

The real winners will be the ones who know how to use the content that exists, not those who try to hoard and protect content for 100 years with arcane copyright laws. The future belongs to those who can integrate, synthesize, and add value to existing knowledge rather than those who simply try to lock it away.

Publishers need to pivot from being copyright guardians to becoming content curators and experience creators. The value will shift from owning content to understanding how to leverage it effectively.

This transformation requires a fundamental mindset change about what publishing means in an AI-driven world.
